2010 College hoop coaching carousel thread

ECU is an excellent place to continue his streak of never having coached a team to the NCAAs.

Yup. And just because Jeff Lebo married a woman from Martin County does not make him a stout hire. If there's something Terry Holland should be able to do, it is find a serious basketball coach. And yet this continues happening ...

Multiple reports say Mike Rice of Robert Morris will talk to Seton Hall about their job on Wednesday.

As for the definition of mid-majors, Gonzaga is the only one that isn't one anymore. The rest still have basketball budgets that are at least three times as small as those in the Big Six conferences.

Donovan turns down 3 mil a year from SJU

And why wouldn't he? Once upon a long, long time ago St. John's was relevant in college hoops. I'm talking like back when I was a kid. Outside of a couple good seasons 10 years ago, they've been completely irrelevant. No way in heck they'd ever get a guy like Donovan. The Johnnies should be looking for someone outside the big six conferences, with a few rare exceptions I suppose. But Donovan sure ain't that exception.

A cold-weather commuter school.

Yeah, that's a draw.

And don't talk to me about NYC or the Gahden. It won't wash.

NY tabs are running wild with thoughts of Donovan, Pitino or Paul Hewitt coming to St. John's.
Not gonna happen.
Also high on the list ... Long Island native Seth Greenberg!
NY Post claims SJU is prepared to offer six years at $1.6 mill per to next coach.

Seth Greenberg would make a lot of sense, even moreso given Virginia Tech's NCAA snuff. I read your points, MMII - all of them - and while they're legit, right now Seth has to feel like he pays the heavy price of playing in the ACC while reaping none of the benefits.

Plus, Greenberg is from the area. Think he couldn't help what Norm Roberts started to rebuild? For whatever SJU faithful want to say, he helped repair the damage Mike Jarvis reportedly did when he blew off the area high school and AAU programs.

St. John's lost a $10M-30M pledge from a wealthy Long Island (Garden City) benefactor when they passed over the Irish Catholic Matt Doherty the last time around. The hiring of Seth Greenberg would shock me, unless I'm missing something.

Yeah . . . hire a blithering incompetent on religious grounds. That makes sense.

You never know -- I watched his teams play and never thought they were horribly coached, I just thought he didn't recruit well enough to win in the SEC -- but ECU is a big step down and it won't shock me if Lebo has some success there not that he is at a lower level.

Well, he's also a local guy......

Interesting to see one of the comments mention Tim Cluess. He's a high school-turned-local D3 coach who wins wherever he goes. He's also a loon and would be a Faustian choice.

Looie says he's not involved in the decision, and the school Prez says the choice is all Monasch's.

People have to remember that this is not their father's St. John's anymore. The local Queens kids who went to SJU now live in the suburbs and send their children--and their money--to Siena, Fairfield, etc.
I'm thinking Hewitt and McCaffery are the 2 most likely candidates, but I think McCaffery is waiting to see what ND does on Brey.

Not too mention $3 million in NYC is like what, $1.8 in Gainesville? And he's already making $3.5 million in Gainesville -- though he is starting to look like a guy who should have taken the Magic's money and run......

Apparently UO is going for Donovan.

Personally I don't see it happening, but then again stranger things have happened.

Here is the funny thing - they have all that money to give and I'll be shocked if any big-name guy on their list takes the job. It just isn't a great job.
