In my humble opinion, you secretly extend the olive branch to Gruden. When he politely says no, then you go with Sumlin. If all else fails, O is not a bad fall back.

You can't do anything secretly with Gruden. Between him and his agent, that would be leaked within minutes.

If USC spends as much or even a little less on a football coach than they did for their basketball coach that nobody had heard of before that one weekend in March, there will be a lot of unhappy campers out there.

I could see the fanbase being OK with Orgeron if USC beats UCLA and/or wins the South. If that happens, he'd still be on a short leash where if they struggled next season, he could be gone. I still think USC will go after a big name or two and it they get turned down, it will come down to Del Rio or Orgeron.

What's hurting Del Rio's chances is that he might not be available until Feb. 3 -- mere days before signing day. Though with that choking dog Peyton Manning and the playoffs, it could be mid-January.

I'm guessing USC wouldn't wait that long for a response. I wonder if he would accept the job and then finish out of the season in Denver.

Denver's not letting him leave until the season is over.

Right, but he wouldn't be the first to do double duty.

If they won't let him do that, no way does he get this job unless he agrees to it secretly. No way does USC risk having to wait until mid-January or early Feb. for an answer.

That Del Rio thing is not going to be any kind of concern. He would have a recruiting guru in place and he would have time to parachute in for big stuff. That's pretty common.

Right, and he's already interviewed, so that's not an issue.

Also depends how much control the administration wants over its head coach.

If USC hires Orgeron, Ed will ask "how high?" each time they dial his phone. With a big name like Gruden, Del Rio or Sumlin, they'll be less likely to be able to gain control.

If Del Rio thinks Denver has a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl, would he dare leave or even divide his attention? We've heard all of our lives that's the ultimate prize. You don't get many good kicks at the can over the course of a career. I know he's a USC alum and maybe that is his dream job. Well, it better be because if he leaves Denver for USC, he'll never go back to the NFL.

Depending on what happens with John Fox's health long-term and how the team fares the rest of this season, Del Rio might wind up as the head coach in Denver.
