And I'm not getting the Auburn love. They just blew a 17-point fourth quarter lead at home against a 6-3 team and needed a complete forking miracle to even win that game.

It's just that the hatred/envy of Alabama has become so strong that we're grasping at straws, hoping that any old bunch of gerbils might pull an upset and save whatever good is left in sports.

Exactly. As I mentioned earlier in this thread (or maybe in the last one), Alabama is not a good match-up for Auburn.

Auburn can't stop the run and Alabama runs on everyone. With the exception of LSU in 2011, all the teams that have beaten Alabama the last 4-5 years had dynamic, downfield passing quarterbacks. Nick Marshall can run, but he's not much of a passer, miracles against Georgia aside.

The fact that Auburn is at home will make it close for a while, but I think Alabama wears Auburn down in the second half just like it did A&M and LSU.

Ok, hypothetically...... if there are more than two major unbeaten (not counting Northern Illinois and Fresno State) standing after the conference championship games, any chance the pollsters say "Screw Alabama, they've had their time in the spotlight. We have every reason to pick someone else this year, so let's do it."?

If Del Rio thinks Denver has a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl, would he dare leave or even divide his attention? We've heard all of our lives that's the ultimate prize. You don't get many good kicks at the can over the course of a career. I know he's a USC alum and maybe that is his dream job. Well, it better be because if he leaves Denver for USC, he'll never go back to the NFL.

Depending on what happens with John Fox's health long-term and how the team fares the rest of this season, Del Rio might wind up as the head coach in Denver.

I think if people think he does a good job as interim coach, he might (emphasis on might) get a sniff for another NFL HC job, something that would have seemed highly unlikely before he took over for Fox.

I don't really think this will happen because even if the Broncos win out and Fox doesn't come back, the credit for that will go to Manning. I can't imagine that Fox isn't back for the playoffs. This isn't exactly an Arians-Pagano situation.

That's happened in the past, but it won't be enough to make a difference. This was ages ago, but I remember Barry Switzer famously voted for unbeaten Fresno State the season when Oklahoma won the national title.

I think John Fox will come back at some point. But it's not a given. So, then what? If Denver wins the Super Bowl, or at least gets to the Super Bowl, I would expect them to stay within the organization and Del Rio seems to be a leading candidate. But, like Mizzou said, he might also be a candidate for other NFL head coaching jobs down the line.

So I guess it really comes down to what would he like to chase: the USC job or an NFL job, either in Denver or somewhere else?

What's hurting Del Rio's chances is that he might not be available until Feb. 3 -- mere days before signing day. Though with that choking dog Peyton Manning and the playoffs, it could be mid-January.

I'm guessing USC wouldn't wait that long for a response. I wonder if he would accept the job and then finish out of the season in Denver.

Denver's not letting him leave until the season is over.

Right, but he wouldn't be the first to do double duty.

If they won't let him do that, no way does he get this job unless he agrees to it secretly. No way does USC risk having to wait until mid-January or early Feb. for an answer.

When was the last assistant coach who "stayed on until the end of the year" before taking a job that was already announced not a quagmire, punctuated by an earlier-than-expected playoff loss?

Buddy Ryan and the 1985 Bears?

Make sure you bring that up the next time you're at a bar in Norman, Oklahoma.

Charlie Weis took the Notre Dame job in 2004 and finished with the Patriots' third Super Bowl win. Romeo Crennel also interviewed with the Browns long before that Super Bowl run ended.

I think there have been others, but I know about that one. You're making way too much of the one-time hurdles, which are not significant.

Well, until Fox returns, Del Rio is the de facto head coach, with all of those responsibilities. Different than just being a coordinator.

Shanahan and the Broncos after the 49ers Super Bowl win.

Per Del Rio...... I've got to think Pat Bowlen and John Elway and the braintrust talked about this prior to naming him the interim coach. Sort of like "If we hand you the reigns for whatever period of time here, you've got to be 100 percent focused and committed to the here and now, not looking over your shoulder at other jobs." Gotta think they had that conversation with Del Rio.

You'd think that because of how dumb you are.
