2013 College Football Coaching Carousel thread...

The only thing I'm hearing around here is, "Oh, god, please not Schiano." I mean, it feels unanimous.

Sources have Franklin and Golden on Penn State's wish list.

... and Larry Johnson Sr. is reportedly the interim coach.

The only reason I could see them wanting Golden is the alumni factor as he really hasn't done anything of note in his time at Miami. heck, Duke smoked them and won the damn division this year.

You obviously have no frame of reference regarding Larry Johnson Sr. But please, enlighten the masses.

Yes, definitely, on all things Penn State I would look to you for perspective. It's so reasoned.

Why the heck would Penn State need an interim coach? They're not playing in any bowl game. Do they not expect to name a coach before spring practice? Signing day?

You need someone to answer the phone, stay on top of recruiting, academics, training, and health issues. Probably more than a few players/recruits have questions that need to be answered.

Fair enough. But you don't need a title to do that. Without knowing who the new coach will be, how much can you really tell anyone? And do the assistants have any promise they'll be around next year or will the AD allow the new coach to clean house?

Either way, I suspect they'll have a new coach within 1-2 weeks. The announcement just struck me as unusual; I don't recall seeing that from other schools who have lost their coach unless they have an actual game to play.

It might also mean he's the guy who agreed to stick around while everyone else starts scrambling for their next gig.

When a student signs a letter of intent, they're pretty well stuck, right? So if the coach gets fired between signing day and the start of the season (like Tressel, Petrino, etc.), the students have to stay with the school, right?

Really? Is the head coach allowed visits that other staff members are not? I did not know that.

Hey, Tom Bradley is available.

I'm not saying LJ Sr. would be a great hire, but he might be a good person to run the store for a couple seasons. He's not a "Penn State guy" but has been around long enough to get some slack from the Paternoists. The current coaching crop out there is underwhelming, and they really need some stability at the top of the university (BoT, presidency, AD) before making the next big hire.

Yeah and all you need to do is look at LJ Jr. to see how great his dad is at keeping a handle on young players. I mean, a boffo job there.

Yeah, his kids are knuckleheads. Doesn't mean he isn't a passable coach, and that's about all Penn State will get at this point.

Penn State might not be a bad fit for Franklin.

The Austin paper sure made it sound like it will be Briles at Texas.

Didn't Wisconsin use this rule to gain an advantage when Bielema took over for Alvarez? I remember there was a month when they essentially had two "head coaches" recruiting instead of one, or something like that.

PSU could do a lot worse than Larry Johnson, Sr. My biggest fear about giving him the big job is, if he fails, it's almost impossible to demote him back to the job he's doing now, which he is very, very good at. So there is a risk there.
