He's got a sub-3.00 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and a .227 BAA.

Wins are a team stat, and the Nationals right now aren't playing like a very good team.

Strasburg's ERA is not below 3.00. Just sayin'

The Nats got swept in a series where the other team scored nine runs in three games. The problem isn't the starting pitching. Strasburg had a shirt first inning today, for sure. He's not real sharp. But he was fine after that. Detwiler gave up TWO runs last night, his WORST start of the season. He's 1-1. His team couldn't score. I guess if he was a winner he would have gone up for LaRoche with the bases loaded and knocked one out of there. Would have found a way besides limiting Cards to two runs. Would have found a way to make the relievers hold on after leaving with a 4-1 lead over the Braves and a 5-1 lead over the Reds. Winners win, you know??

(I don't know how to make it blue).

LaRoche, meanwhile, has struck out five times in a row.


Last year, the Nats started 14-4. SEVEN weeks later, they were 10 games over .500 - and then they took off. A little too early to panic but the Braves hot start makes it look worse. Being down five games is never good but the Nats blew such a lead in 18 days in 2005.

So, yeah, they won 98 games last year despite playing .500 ball for seven weeks.

Yeah, I know it's a small sample size, but Adam LaRoche has a .169/.258/.339 slash line, and has 23 strikeouts in 59 at-bats.

I'll be over here (possibly prematurely) patting myself on the back.

Hey, someone refresh me: In 2011, the Braves led the wild-card by how many with how much time left? More than 10 games with about six weeks, right? shirt can change in a hurry. A quick start sure makes things easier.

IIRC, LaRoche has had some pretty awful starts in his career. He's usually not good in April.

Last year's start was very much the exception. He joked previously about Chipper Jones calling him around Mother's Day complaining about an error in the paper. "It says you're hitting .140!" Uh, no error, LaRoche said.

He'll be around .270 by end of season with 35 or so HRs. Nats will win a good many more than they lose, despite such "shirtty, no count" pitchers as some seem to think.

Will it be enough? We'll see. That's kind of what makes it fun.
