Put him in Arizona or St. Louis and see how good he is with lesser casts.

To me it seems like a very pragmatic deal in the day and age of stupid contracts.
It's a contract based on performance and not hope. Too many teams get saddled
with contracts based on hope and they end up hampering the team. The Jets/Sanchez
is a good example of this.

    QT--

You and I rarely agree on these boards but, on this, you're 100% correct.

Kaepernick is making exactly what he should for his position. You need an elite-to-very good QB to win a Super Bowl. You won't win one in 2014 with a lousy QB. Kaepernick is on the edge of elite but I feel the most difficult to prepare for.

People rip his 58% completion rate but, every time he scrambles for positive yardage, that is a completion. Hell, it's better than a completion because he won't throw a pick. The only negative is a fumble or an injury.

Now only that, it's back-breaking to a defense when he scrambles on a broken play for a first down and that doesn't show up in the stats.

Think to the playoffs. Green Bay needs a stop on 3rd and 8 late in a tie game. Everybody in the stadium knows Kaepernick will either throw it to Crabtree or scramble. He scrambles. Get the third down. Wins the game.

That is his value for now.

If he ever becomes proficient in hitting that second read on a play, he could easily reach HOF level.

The more I read about the fine points, the more I think that Kaep was either (1) let down by his agents or (2) really committed to taking less $$ to let the Niners sign others because I really think he did not max out his leverage, or even come close to max.

Put any quarterback with a worse team and they won't be as productive nor win as much. That's kind of obvious, isn't it?

It strikes me as an incredibly incentive-laden contract.

I hope he earns every cent and hits that $2 million bonus every year. Hell, it would be amazing if he hit it half the time.

Kaepernick's agent is not one of the better-known guys.

I can't imagine Tom Condon or David Dunn agreeing to a deal where so much is based on performance.

I'm really curious to see what this does to Alex Smith's deal, which is being worked on. I'm assuming Smith is still with Condon. If memory serves, Russell Wilson has a baseball agent and Andrew Luck is represented by his uncle, who teams with one of the bigger agencies.

To be fair, Flacco is represented by a lower-level agent who obviously did an amazing job with Flacco's deal.

He is in an ideal situation. This isn't hard to figure out.

He's in an ideal situation. There's no question about that.

He's an incredible talent, but the criticism is not unwarranted. I don't think it's "Kaepernick sucks" criticism as far as it's, "He's not on the level of Rodgers, Brees, Manning and Brady..."

    Admittedly, that's a high bar.

I think there are legitimate maturity questions as well.
He'll be 27 by the end of next season.
He is not a "kid" anymore.

He's made 29 starts. I agree about the maturity issue. I just think his level of talent is high enough that they can't risk losing him, and I think once the dust of the initial announcement settled, it was actually a pretty good deal.

Does this guy strike anyone as intelligent?
Never mind the no-checkdowns, just the way he carries himself.
