Carly Simon is not rock n roll.
Eminem is not rock n roll.
Dolly Parton is not rock n roll.
Lionel Ritchie, Dionne Warwick, Fela Kuti (had to look him up), no.

MC5 blazed the trail for The Stooges, Sex Pistols, et al. They deserve a berth.

 

Kate Bush ain't rock and roll either. And I love her. What a talent.

 

Yep, she's great. There should be an electronica hall of fame, she would be there along with Bjork and Brian Eno.

Why is Nick Lowe not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame?

 

I'm sure I've made this point in a past incarnation of this thread, but I never like the "it's not rock and roll" argument in these debates. People get pissed if a nominee doesn't look like Spinal Tap. Rock and roll is about a lot more than white guys with long hair and spandex. The hall has always been good about focusing on the spirit of rock and including significant acts that don't sound like Journey. I'm not an Eminem fan but if you're going to discount him from consideration in a rock hall of fame then you're creating a ridiculously narrow focus.

Fela Kuti is a brilliant Afrobeat artist with a significant influence. I'd vote for him without a second thought even though I don't find his records filed under "rock" in the record store.

Having said that...

Dionne Warwick? There's no spirit of rock there. I don't think she was ever anything but an alternative for people who didn't like rock at all.

And Dolly Parton is the new Betty White. She may get nominated for the NFL Hall of Fame at this rate. But while I'd absolutely defend people like Willie and Johnny and Waylon in the rock hall, Dolly seems like a massive stretch to me.

Because the voters don't know who he is.

I love Nick Lowe. I've seen him live two or three times. I have a bunch of his records -- I even own a copy of "Pinker and Prouder than Previous," which has to put me in pretty select company.

I'd vote for Nick just on the strength of "Jesus of Cool" and his producing work... but I'll be stunned if he even gets nominated.

And on a side note, Duran Duran getting nominated while The Smiths and Joy Division/New Order aren't in kind of pisses me off. (Although snubbing the Smiths means no speech from Morrissey, so that's cool. Not that he would show up.)

Remind me again which punk era rock and roll star is still making ground-breaking new music and has scored No. 1 albums in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s and yet doesn’t get a sniff from the Hall? Oh yeah, the Modfather himself.

Weller's really hurt by his total lack of exposure in the US. It's largely self-inflicted -- he's never made any effort to build the audience here.

"On Sunset" was my favorite album of 2020. I picked up a big Style Council compilation on vinyl last year and it's freakin' great. I wasn't a huge fan at the time because it wasn't The Jam, but their stuff really holds up.

 

How perfect of a song is "Jolene"? I mean, every cover even seems perfect.

I never know what to think of the Rock HOF, but, God, I bet so many musicians would say of Dolly, "Oh, hell yes, she's rock and roll."

How much does "mentality" play into it? Or should it?
