Watching men fly aircraft and play volleyball when Top Gun came out in 1986 was not on my radar screen.

Godfather movies. Pick any two. Pick any all.

Besides, "The Hitcher" also came out that year,
and C. Thomas Howell did a better Tom Cruise turn.

Halfway through "The Hitcher," I needed a bathroom break to unload two beers, and yet I didn't move from my chair until five minutes after the movie ended. The intensity of that flick riveted me to my seat like no movie before or since. Instant classic.

"Die Hard" came pretty close, though.

I still remember when the elfin Jennifer Jason Leigh was split in twain. It rocked my youth.

I have no interest in the mafia movies, but I think I got through most of "Casino." So no Godfathers, etc.
    Schindler's List
    Clockwork Orange

With you on the second part — I also have avoided just about all the superhero movies. Except Guardians of the Galaxy and Wonder Woman (the first ones in each case).

“A Clockwork Orange” is a disturbing film for sure, and not for everyone, but I think it’s a classic.

As for three I have not seen (besides superhero movies):

    Christmas Story
    Chinatown
    Braveheart

    Among many more

I've seen 99 of the AFI's Top 100 movies list. A Clockwork Orange is the only one I haven't seen. Something about it scares me enough to not want to be my usual completist self and check off the last box on the list.

Movies are very much self-selecting - seeing movies outside my wheelhouse/interest probably made me more knowledgeable about film - and also made me realize most critics aren't very good at their jobs. One of the things that made Ebert/Siskel so good was that they judged movies on how well they fulfilled their premise, ambition - a fluffy movie could get a better review than an "important" film about a sensitive subject that might be catnip to 80 percent of critics.

Brown Bunny is a good movie even if Ebert trashed the first iteration.

Vincent Gallo tweaked and tinkered and then Ebert liked it.

Their comments when Star Wars was about to be re-released for the first time were a great example of your point with Siskel and Ebert. I can't say that I completely agree with their take on the movie, but they definitely appreciate it for what it intends to be rather than hold it up to the same criteria as movies that more traditionally appeal to critics.
