All-purpose, running Tim Tebow sucks/is a deity thread!

Herbert, I think the question is, what do you do with him going forward? Double Down seems to think he deserves to be handed the job and to prepare for next season as the starter. I say he deserves a chance to compete for the job with somebody who legitimately can be a starter in the NFL.

And, in the meantime, you plan on a contingency for how to take advantage of his talents if he isn't the starter. As mentioned before, I'd look for ways to use him at multiple positions.

Somebody made the point the other day -- I think it was you, Brian -- that he's the only quarterback in the league who can get away with not one but a string of horrible passing performances, and retain his starting job. Look around at guys who have been benched, or who should be benched. Did Matt Leinart ever stink this much, to lose his job and pretty much not get a sniff since? Has even Sanchez sucked this badly? Guys who play this poorly are drummed out of the league pretty quickly.

I think the only reason he got away with it was because 1: they were still winning, remaining competitve and not turning the ball over. And 2: They have NO ONE better.
I think reason 2 will change in the offseason.

I think they'll ride with him until he completely flames out (can that be very far away?)

He has to be making them a pile of money.

I'll bet my mortgage he's on the Madden cover next year.

That's a good question. I do think they'll have patience if you are winning. And that's all Tebow does...well, at least that's all you can say good about his performances most of the time.

The difference is quarterbacks who play poorly, lose. Tebow won 7 and brought other skills to the table that weren't passing.

That's what different between him and Leinart or anyone else. Everyone, or most everyone, thinks Tebow is a football player who could play another position, but not an every down NFL quarterback.

He's about the only NFL quarterback you could say that about.

I am in the camp that, given some time and regular practice, he'll get better. What I saw in the KC loss wasn't a terrible quarterback. What I saw was a guy unwilling or unable to pull the trigger for fear of making an error.

Just spitballing but I suspect he's as sick of the media coverage as the next guy.

Why is he scared to make an error? Is it because he has reason to believe he WOULD make the error? Didn't the previous two games show that, in these situations, he would make an error?

Interesting stat now that the playoffs are here:

Orton vs. playoff teams: 1-1 (w/Broncos), 2-0 (w/Chiefs), 3-1 overall. He beat the Bengals, Packers and Broncos
Orton vs. non-playoff teams: 0-3 (Broncos), 0-1 (Chiefs), 0-4.

Tebow vs. playoff teams: 0-2
Tebow vs. non-playoff teams: 7-2

Against playoff teams, all Orton does is win baby!

Actually, if I remember correctly, Herb's point on dishonoring the game was a reference to the system the Broncos have run, not Tebow himself.

I continue to get scourged for a hasty comment.

Listen, I believed the Broncos disrespected the position (and the pro game) by running a Harry Highschool offense early on. I thought it was wrong-headed to hide the quarterback and just pray that he doesn't fork up. I know that offense became more sophisticated (as sophisticated as one can be with a limited thrower like Tebow operating it), but this remark was made when they were running a single wing almost exclusively.

shirt, that never happens here. :)

I'm not getting into it again, but I do not see Double Down's complaint, at all.

This was a pretty heated dialectic at times, but there weren't any strawmen being put up. The argument was smart and passionate. All good.

And I think we all learned more about football by having this fight.

It's like when people get worked up about baseball threads here.

There was a thread about an MVP vote on Journalism Topics, and it turned into a debate over whether Michael Young's contributions could be fairly measured statistically. Someone chimes in, "These baseball threads are worse than political threads!" And another person or two agrees happily.

Myself and a couple others posted back along the lines of, "Really? Just seems like a fun debate to me."

Like you'd have in a sports bar when we were all younger.

What other position could Tebow play? Fullback? Dot know if he can block. Tight end? Doesnt seem fluid enough to beat a linebacker or safety.

As for being a winner, Tim Couch took the Browns to the playoffs an nobody is confusing him as a winner.
