Former Tar Heels football player Tydreke Powell called into North Carolina radio station WJMH this morning and provided some interesting details about the academic misconduct that allegedly involved hundreds of UNC athletes.

Powell quoted former football coach Butch Davis as telling players, "If you all came here for an education, you should have gone to Harvard," while explaining that players were directed to take classes in the now-notorious AFAM department.

Powell says he took a paper class, and that "everybody knew" the nature of them. He also told the WJMH hosts that players were instructed to fail learning disability assessment tests so as to ensure players would be provided assistance during tests and for note-taking.

When asked about UNC basketball coach Roy Williams, Powell called Williams a "snake," and said students sought out classes in which basketball players were enrolled because that was a sure sign there'd be no actual work involved.

Finally, Powell threw in an anecdote about how a female student did all the work for one athlete, after which "we all ran a train on her."

Have to wonder how many slacker normal students today have figured out this con: intentionally fail one LD assessment, get four years of easy street special assistance. Clever little scam.

Unless you are a superstar who knows that you will be a first-round pick, how the hell don't you look to transfer the minute Davis said that. What's the purpose of busting your hump for all those hours playing football for that scholarship when you can't even use the scholarship for your education?

Baron, they are all superstars who know they are going to be a first-round pick.

    That, and:

    1. They would get the pleasure of sitting out a year anywhere they'd go, thus losing value.
    2. Coach Davis sounds exactly like the kind of prick who would refuse to release someone from their scholarship.

Plenty of potential hassle, not much promised in terms of rewards elsewhere.

Don't envy the guy who got caboose duty on that train.

Rather interesting that a UNC football coach says that in light of former football coach Dick Crum's 1980s grousing about North Carolina's expectations: "Carolina wants to be Harvard during the week and Oklahoma on Saturday."

The only problem with the interview: apparently there is no proof it actually was Powell.

FWIW, after now listening to the actual interview, I think we might be misinterpreting what was meant by "ran a train" here.

He was talking about a basketball player he was in a class with, says the guy didn't show up at any classes until the final exam, at which he was accompanied by a girl who took the test for him, when finished she handed the test to the basketball player and "we then ran a train on it." Which I interpret as most likely meaning the other athletes there also copying the answers, not what you dirty little peckers (and deadspin) instantly presumed.

In my experience, it's not very common. I've been teaching at the university level for close to 20 years. Over those years I'd estimate I've had around 5,000 students, and I'd be very surprised if more than 50 accommodation plans have crossed my desk.

My favorite aspect to this whole story is Mike Krzyzewski's rally to the defense of a fellow ACC coach (coaches if you include dirty Syracuse and Jim Boeheim and the forever charming but slimy Rick Pitino)

Saint Mike, like the Church who he believes emulates him, are forever damning the victims to save the guilty. How about putting the kids first, Million Dollar Mike?

BTW, Is Calipari the only coach to lead 2 schools to vacated NCAA tournament appearances?
