Another academic scandal; UNC is f-cked

K probably doesn't want anyone looking too closely at the courses his guys have taken at NC Central, so he's not going to throw stones.

I'm talking about role players/bench guys. There are 85 scholarships. I would think that if you weren't starting by your junior year, you'd have a pretty good clue that you're not going to the NFL. In that case, find a FCS school in which you can not only play right away, but would, I would think, care a bit more about academics, since millions of dollars isn't on the line.

Yeah, for a guy who hasn't paid any attention to school in the first three years (and probably wouldn't be in college in the first place if not for football), turning your life upside down for a marginal potential gain does not seem like a good play.

Which is part of the point. They should be paying attention to school. It's about priorities.

Yeah, if I am at Duke or UNC and haven't cracked the starting lineup by my junior year, I am definitely going to take a long, hard look at either Western Carolina or Appalachian State so I can go ahead and focus more on my academics.

I actually like Calipari more with each passing day, because he seems least interested in the phony bullshirt. He makes it pretty clear he's happy to have kids on campus who are only there for a short period of time, and whatever they get out of it is up to them. There is none of this "MOLDER OF MEN" bullshirt.

Agreed. He isn't the disease. He's a symptom.

I could do without him ever talking about academics again; when he took the Kentucky job he said how his guys were going to have to be good students to, probably because he feels pressured to say stuff like that. But other than that, he is coming the closest to doing what's best for the kids. And I'm sure it helps greatly in recruiting that kids know he isn't going to B.S. them and tell them they need another year to get ready when in reality it's just the coach needing another year of their talent. When it's time to go, he is pushing them out the door.

I don't know about Duke, but it sure seems like UNC hasn't been giving them much of an education. How much value are they getting out of that, when, after four years, they get a piece of paper that they can't use for anything.

You don't think, before the scandal details came out, there weren't plenty of employers who liked seeing UNC degree/former Tar Heel athlete on a resume or CV? There are alumni at most schools who go out of their way to hire former athletes who manage to graduate.

We can be idealistic if we want, but we're talking about 18-22 year old guys who see an opportunity to play their favorite sport, get laid a lot and walk away with a degree from a highly-rated school. How many would you expect to say, you know I'll got to Furman so I can actually sit in a sociology class instead?
