AP layoffs starting today?

From Gawker: A tipster tells us that the word amongst AP union members is that today could be the day for "70 or 80" layoffs. The rumors say that the layoffs will be spread across the company nationally. Although—ominously—we hear that New York staffers have been summoned to an "important meeting" this afternoon.

If they're about to have layoffs, why the hell do I keep getting those AP job opening e-mail alerts? Just doesn't make any sense.

Heard they are hacking all editorial assistants (about 55 of the 80-90 positions). Heard of some news editors gone. There's conflicting info on the rest and haven't heard anything mentioned about sports.

Gawker is reporting that some biz writers in NYC were let go, as well as a few people from the DC bureau ... also shut down a bureau in central Wisconsin and laid off its lone reporter ...

Could be that the openings you're being alerted about are ones deemed important enough to fill once a person leaves. It's like if a paper cuts an outdoors reporter position the same day the education reporter leaves. There would be a job opening for the education reporter position, even though there was a layoff elsewhere at the paper.

  11. I'm hearing rumblings down here in Texas that long-time Austin-based AP photog Harry Cabluck got the sack. Didn't know him, but I hear he was well-respected.

Someone should tell the AP writer in Sac-town tonight, that Memphis State is just plain ol' Memphis now.

"It was the first matchup between Rose and Evans, who both played point guard for one season at Memphis State before moving on to the NBA. While Rose was earning Rookie of the Year honors a year ago with the Bulls, Evans took over the starring role at Memphis and later was the fourth overall pick by the Kings."
