I tend to kind of disagree with the guy's ARod points, but bringing up Benitez is just ridiculous. The guy gagged in huge spots like it was nobody's business.

He seemed like a substantial upgrade over Franco when he took over in 99. But then he blew the Game 6 save against the Braves. A year later, Snow's HR in SF and Game 1 against the Yankees. 2001, back to back weekend BSs in late September against the Braves to effectively end the Mets' season. Hell, even 2002 and and 2003 he coughed up big games, when the team wasn't really even contending (started the August collapse straight to hell with the doubleheader BS against Arizona in 02, the Yankees game with the four walks in 03). So there's no way you can rip a Mets fan for dragging Armando down -- he did it himself.

And you can't even say it was being in New York that did it to him, with the travesty of his 97 ALCS in Baltimore.

If paid-off prick Garcia is on the level and the flyout to Tarasco isn't ruled a HR, I'm convinced that Benitez's career is totally different. Instead of good closer, maybe near HOF level.

That's an interesting point. But I think what happens after that is what separate the great closers from the rest of the unwashed masses. Eck was still stellar after Gibson. Rivera coughed up one of his first postseason leads as a closer. Even a guy like Foulke got past Ortiz's double in the 2003 DS to be shut-down in the 2004 playoffs.

Anyone who thinks the 1996 ALCS ruined Armando Benitez--and that he would otherwise have had the mental strength to handle anything remotely close to a pressure situation--is certifiably insane.

One great year closing in front of flies in Florida does not make up for innumerable meltdowns in huge spots for the Orioles and Mets.

New York Mets fans didn't care that Benitez drilled Tino.
New York Mets fans cared that Benitez could save 40 games against the Pirates but not one game against the Braves.

Anyhoo, I offered up Eckstein, Saito and Clemens for Stephen Drew, Chris Young and Linebrink.

Now, Clemens is going to retire after this season whereas I think Young is a keeper for next year, and several years. He has 21 W/QS and a 3.64 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 111 K's. Clemens has 7 starts and only 6 W/QS. His ERA is 2-something and he has 31 K's in 40 innings.

Saito has 7 saves, but he's not exactly Mariano Rivera, probably not a keeper for next year. Linebrink is a nice set-up man with a good ERA and decent K numbers, but probably not a keeper, either.

Eckstein is a .300 hitter with adequate total bases and runs scored, while Drew is one of the top prospects who has 6 hits (including 2 doubles, one triple) in 20 at-bats. He's a definitely keeper for the future.

My team is in 7th place (out of 10) and the team with which I want to trade is in 1st place. That's where I feel the rub is, because other owners think I'm helping pad his team. I think it's a fair trade for him this season, and for me for the future.

Am I wrong on this?

Seriously, I don't like the trade (Linebrink has no keeper value and I don't think Drew's ready), but in a keeper league, there is no way that trade should be vetoed.

I try not to drip roto on the baseball threads, but this one has bugged the shit out of me. Drew is a keeper. So is Young. Linebrink isn't a keeper, but neither is Saito. And Clemens is retiring. And Eckstein is good, not great, but a decent numbers guy.

Arrghhh!

Getting back to real baseball, the Yanks just rallied past the Strangers. A-Rod homered. He's such a fraud. Can't believe he actually gets paid $250 million. What a sucker.

Edit: Astros just yanked him in the 9th after he finally got a guy out.
