TD... I remember watching both Halloween and The Thing in the theater with a packed house. Both GREAT movies! Halloween is my fave horror movie and The Thing is definitely in my top five, too.

Wish Carpenter had made a sequel. I read the comic book version of the sequel.

Always wish Stephen King had continued The Mist to a conclusion, too. I hear they're making it into a movie!

Rafterman shot the sniper but didn't Joker finish her off? I've seen the movie many times but I'm drawing blank on this one. I do have the boot camp portion of the movie basically memorized though.

Had a chance to watch Halloween in the theater in Orlando when the 20th anniversary came around but I didn't go because I was sick.

Halloween is my all-time fave horror flick. Might I also suggest you check out Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS also, it is quite good as well.

They made a sequel to The Thing in comics? I know they did the video game in 2002, which I recently beat and is very good.

Yes. Joker finished her off with his .45 sidearm.

That's right. I thought I remembered Joker finishing her off, but I couldn't confirm it.

Lot of great deaths in The Hitcher, but this was the best.

    Here's a couple more:

Jeff Bridges at the end of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.
Bill Paxson going out firing in Aliens.
Jeremy Irons' son accidentally falling to his death at the end of Damage.
A young Larry "Tyrone 'Clean' Miller" Fishburne in Apocalypse Now

Sometimes a great scene deals with the way a character handles his own impending demise, like Pacino in Donnie Brasco.  He calmly gets the late night phone call, takes off his watch and wallet, puts them away for his wife to find later, then leaves the apartment -- never to return.  We never heard the content of the call, knew his destination or how he was killed -- we just know it happened.

Agreed totally. I think I got a little off track from the "best" to most "gruesome" death scene. But many times the best are the most gruesome.

That was terrible. My father went the same way.

There was also a scene early in Halloween II, where Michael Myers kills an old lady in her house. He pops out from behind a chair with a big knife in his hand, and for a split second before he brings the knife down and the scene ends the camera is focused on his eyes. They're crazy-looking, but with a sense of purpose. Pretty chilling.
