Not all of us are that blind, Bubs. Unfair to besmirch Peart because of the fanaticism of some of the Rush types, but also a bit of a blanket statement to paint all Rush fans as blind loyalists to Peart and only Peart ...

Not based on what grief I get here, and I also don't see many Rush fans conceding that Watts is a great drummer in their fanaticism for Peart (and it's not just Watts, it's antipathy towards others like Moon, Bonham, etc.), but greater point taken.

Where's the love for Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction?

  4. Can't say I'm with you, Junk.
Watts -- and Ringo, who's another argument entirely -- are essential parts of the sound of their bands. (Look at the continuing stream of lameass drummers who've played behind McCartney, who probably was better than all of them himself.) The Stones would not sound the same -- they would not BE the Stones -- without Charlie Watts. "Gimme Shelter" wouldn't have those great, down-cascading fills at the end of every line, and Tumbling Dice wouldn't have been half as raunchy.
I can't speak for Peart; not enough of a Rush fan, but enough people have told me how good he is, so I accept it. Charlie's pretty damn good, though.

Watts and Starr are timekeepers. Very good ones, but timekeepers nonetheless.
Not to be a jerk, but if you put video of Peart alongside Watts, well...

I respect the hell out of each musician in The Who, but I think that clip doesn't do Moon much justice. It's more noise than anything else. And I always thought "My Generation" was more of a base feature.

I've seen Travis Barker (Blink 182, (+44)) in concert four times, and he's simply amazing.

    Here's a clip:

Genesis - excerpt from "Firth of Firth"
(Still sounds outstanding all these years later ... ):

Genesis - "Drum Duet" - Phil Collins and Chester Thompson:

Here's a sample of that guy from Rush ... name escapes me :):

Now that's a better sample of Keith. The dude's got some quick hands.

In all seriousness, the crux of Junkie's comment above is where I just disagree in principle.

It's not about doing "more", it's about fitting in with the music you're playing.

It's why Watts fits the Stones and why Peart fits Rush. Which is the better band? That's up to you to decide.

And that's my one nice Rush comment for the year. :D
