The Country Club, used to be a turf donkey and could play it every Monday.

I need to pick up the habit again.

I've heard that one's pretty good.

  3. Best on mainland:

    1) Pinehurst No. 2
    2) Harbour Town
    3) Upper Cascades at The Homestead

Several in Hawaii, best were Royal Kaanapali, Kapalua and Poipu Bay.

    1. Pacific Dunes, Bandon, Ore. -- far & away the best
    2. Pebble
    3. Winged Foot
    4. Big Sky, Pemberton, B.C. (20 miles from Whistler)
    5. Bandon Dunes
... and, a quirky but fun private course in, I believe, Westchester County, N.Y.: Ardmore CC

Pebble, but I haven't played Pacific Dunes yet.

    Pinehurst was awesome.

Played Doral once. Loved the course but was devoured by squadrons of mosquitoes.

Favorite played? A course called Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz.

I didn't get to play it, but I did a story on Pacific Dunes (and sister course Bandon Dunes), and Pacific Dunes is the most beautiful course I've ever seen. It might be the most beautiful place I've ever been.

  8. Tie.

The Country Club -- But I loved sitting in the clubhouse afterwards, drinking a beer amid the memorabilia, as much as I did the round.
Portmarnock Golf Club -- Pure Ireland.

I always say the same thing abut Augusta National. Haven't played there, but it might be the most beautiful place I've ever been.

I've been dying to play Royal Kaanapali for years. I stayed at the Maui Eldorado when I was a teenager, and we had to walk through the course to get to the beach. I drooled non-stop every time I did that walk.

I haven't played any top tier courses in the U.S. I've played Glen Abbey near Toronto, a Nicklaus course where they've played the Canadian Open most of the past 30 years. Also the course where Woods made that insane sand shot from 200 yards away, over water, with a six-iron, on the 72nd hole, to beat Grant Waite by a stroke in the 2000 tournament.

Just for a goof, I tried that shot when I played the course. Didn't get the same results.
