Billy Donovan going to Magic

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by friend of a friend, May 31, 2007.

  1. The story says one source said Grant's emergency was Donovan wanting to come back.
Would you report that based on one source? I doubt I would, unless it was Donovan or the AD, and I knew they VERY well. Even then, I might need confirmation.

A story like this gets circulated through college basketball channels, not through U of Florida channels.

For the local guys who cover UF, basketball is a secondary beat. Goodman has college basketball sources nationwide.

If it's one of those folks as the source, why would you need additional confirmation?

In that case, to prevent outing the source. If you run a one-source nugget, and you're worth your salt, it would probably winnow the potential leaks to a select few.

    Touche.

  6. Excellent point.
Also, I'm always hesitant to use something based only on one unnamed source because it would be too easy for them to burn you. It's one thing if you have an established relationship with them, but if you don't deal with them all that often, it would make me nervous.

    Grant didn't have an emergency.
Plane flew in. Flew out 45 minutes later. No Grant. It was allegedly during this time that Foley got the call from Billy.

It's an NBA thing, not just a UF thing.

Fox Sports with stories like this will fast become a must read. While reading Donavan story I noticed that Mark Kriegel is now writing a column for them.

The best was I was listening to ESPN radio on my way home from work last night and they were doing the "Andy Katz has reported....." stuff. I turned it up the dial a few spots to the local FoxSports Radio affilliate and lo and behold it was "FoxSports. Com's Jeff Goodman first reported......"

So I ask, who actually broke the story?

And it doesn't surprise me that this would come from someone like a Goodman or a Katz because I'm sure they were working the phones hard to try and get the scoop on who is getting the UF job and likley one of their sources was Grant or someone very close to Grant who tipped them off.

Magic writers likely weren't pursuing these kinds of stories and were probably not focused on this over the weekend since Donovan had been hired and had his presser.

FoxSports.com definitely had it before ESPN.com, that's for sure.

You'd figure the Sentinel's UF writer might've heard something ...
