Budget talks: This is getting nasty

The Boehner plan is in trouble:

If Dems think this is the best deal they can get, they better rally some votes for it.

The Club for Growth has come out against it's not going to get enough Republican votes to pass.

Lots of pressure on the House Republicans to not compromise right when they're on the verge of complete victory.

    Look up "Pyrrhic" victory . . .

For the GOP, and for the country.

    Jesus wept.

I've heard enough talk radio callers to realize I really don't know what is and isn't a deal breaker for either side. In a lot of instances it sounds like the two sides aren't that far apart.

    - cut spending (but not Social Security or Medicare)
    - don't raise taxes.
    - cut waste.
    - and we need to really cut the debt and solve the problem, not just buy some time.

I'm sure there will be some polls out soon and maybe we'll be surprised.

Boehner doesn't have to run nationwide.

This is very true and it does put Obama at a disadvantage. Probably not possible, but I would love to see if even one of the 435 reps is polling below 50 percent in his/her own district. I'm sure there aren't more than five in the whole country, and I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't even one.

That said, and as Michael Gee has noted, Obama is weak. He should be pressing this.

The only way you make a deal is if everyone loses a bit. Close loopholes and tax credits, increase the age for full Social Security by a year, but leave Medicare alone, close a few military bases, freeze COLAs for all government workers, cut agricultural subsidies.

Obama says he would veto the Boehner plan.

    But sadly must govern so.

    Yeah, this plan sounds DOA.

And it seems impossible that the House will pass the Reid plan, so how is this thing going to come together?

Either one of the three parties involved (House, Senate, Obama) will panic and cave at the very last moment or we'll have to actually default, and experience the consequences of it, for the stalemate to be broken.
