Can't afford to travel to cover women's golf? Problem solved.

The United States Golf Association is offering financial assistance to help cover expenses for writers to cover women's golf events; something called the Driving Equity Grant Program.

I'll commend the USGA for doing something other than just coming up with worthless hashtags.

At the very least an ethical discussion for legit news organizations whether to apply for this. I know the U.S. Women's Open held a media day a month or two ago in California. I imagine the USGA offered to pay travel costs for that.

Very interesting. Key sentence from the release:

As part of the grant application, outlets will be required to demonstrate how the monetary support will enhance their coverage and ultimately shine a brighter light on female golfers.

So are they looking for lifestyle mags and mom blogs (not being snarky on the latter, there are of course moms on the LPGA) or journalism? If the story of the event is an alleged cheating incident or something, that might not shine a bright light on anyone. But are we talking coverage or fluff? I think we know the answer.

Merely trading money for fluffing. Some will do it and not think twice.

As an SE with a two-time USGA champ in our coverage area and zero budget for serious travel, I'm at least curious. If they're willing to foot the bill for us to staff a US Amateur or US Open in the near future, I'd be silly not to listen.

There's a great story for the weekend with Megha Ganne. An American amateur no less. The event will get more coverage and better ratings than it has had since Michelle Wie won it.

Is this the same LPGA that wanted rights to all photos taken during one of the Hawaii tournaments 10 years or so ago?

    It's the USGA, so no.

I have a local high school senior who's shit-hot and uncommitted to any college in a possible exploration of pulling a Nelly. So we'll see.

I can tell you this about the USGA: if any news outlet accepted that financial help, then wrote something they didn't like, they'd get reminded about very quickly. I wouldn't recommend accepting anything like that from any sports organization. But the USGA would be way up there among organizations that would expect a quid pro quo.
