The Rankin Ledger, a Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger product that publishes three days a week and covers suburban Rankin County, has an opening in sports. This is a writing job (no layout involved) that will keep you very busy covering 13 high schools and various other athletic events in a growing area. Most of the work will be for the Rankin Ledger, but there are opportunities to write for The Clarion-Ledger and for advancement within the company. There also are opportunities for blogging, video and other online work. The position will be open in late December. To apply, send a cover letter, resume and some writing samples to rhampton@clarionledger.com. Snail mail works, too: Rusty Hampton, Sports Editor, The Clarion-Ledger, PO Box 40, Jackson, MS, 39201. E-mail me if you have questions. No phone calls please.

The high schools alone will keep the new sports guy on the go. A good mix of schools (large/small, city/county, public/private) and in-county rivalries. One thing Rusty didn't mention is that the Braves' AA team plays in Pearl, located in Rankin County, so there may be some pro coverage opportunities there. But you also have the many select/park & rec soccer programs, the softball tournaments in Brandon, the cross country/track meets in Pearl, etc., etc.

  7. Unless things have changed, the only time Braves would be dealt with would be for features, if that. They mostly let the C-L deal with that because of the unusual deadlines.
