Johnny Dawkins was bad at everything, but he was especially terrible at recruiting.

It usually goes along with fairly ridiculous critiques of non-white coaches' in-game coaching too. We've seen it here regarding Martin. There's nothing wrong with his in-game coaching, it's just a crutch.

Leonard Hamilton used to have that reputation, but then he started recruiting.

As a Steelers fan, I can attest to the fact that Mike Tomlin is a shitty in-game coach. Pretty sure they're still playing zone against the Patriots as we speak. /threadhop

I just think it's lazy analysis on college coaches.

I can't think of the last time I heard a black coach described as a great "Xs and Os" coach but I constantly hear "great recruiter". Some clearly are. Just as some are probably shitty recruiters.

It's become the coaching version of the "dual-threat quarterback".

Let's face it, tough to get a D-I coaching job if you aren't a good recruiter.

How many coaches are, truly, great Xs and Os coaches? Most teams I've seen run a simple motion offense or use the pick and roll, which are so simple that high school teams and younger can grasp. Defense is much harder to coach and get players to buy into, but by all accounts Martin has been good at that. Hell, Boehiem has gotten 40-plus years out of his 2-3 system.

Calipari is 10 times a better recruiter/salesperson than he is a coach.

Calipari's lifetime WL percentage in the NBA tells you all you need to know about his "coaching ability."
