Comedians on sets watching football

So between Nikki Glaser’s post-game “roasts” on Thursday Night Football and Shane Gillis jokes about Alabama paying players (and kind of pissing off Nick Saban) before Friday’s Notre Dame-Indiana game, I have to ask: Why this has become a thing? Not only are they bringing bigger and bigger-name comedians on to these pre- and post-game shows for entertainment purposes and keep viewers tuning in, but they bring them on to shit on the product and the players.

Why are the NFL, the NFLPA, the NCAA and college sports, in general, OK with this? I realize this is nothing new, and you can go back to the really lame Fox NFL Sunday “bits” with Rob Riggle and others poking fun at teams and players. But I am surprised that this hasn’t backfired and badly. Maybe athletes would rather have Nikki Glaser make fun of their looks than have an analyst criticize their game.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think sports are above ridicule and cutting humor and satire, whether it’s coming from columnists, outside commentators, late-night comedians, etc. But this is being done by those sports’ TV/media partners. They’re paying comics to be part of the show for the sole purpose of “roasting” the players and product (probably not the owners, by the way). It just seems really odd to me that this is a thing.

 

I have absolutely no use for Nikki Glaser. One-trick pony, and the one trick is cheap shots.

 

Fox used to have on Frank Caliendo with his Madden impression. Then he got a special on one of the Turner networks which, IIRC, did not go well.

 

Glaser is a nasty skank.

Never forget that Entertainment is the first thing in the WWL's name. They only care about ratings and money, and whoever gets those is good to them.

Speaking of GameDay, this was a quite interesting story about the show's "golden boy" who eventually got the boot from the WWL:

There is nothing remotely funny about Gillis or Glaser.

College football should be treated as the somber, glorious, All-American experience it is.
