Brawl in Oakland....Joe BLanton from the A's was tossed, Miguel Batista from the M's was just tossed...
Ibanez for the M's hit a double and somehow the ball ended up behind the backstop
The ball was behind the backstop near Ichiro and Blanton came over and shoved Ichiro then another M's player, not sure who, came over and gave Blanton a shove then the benches cleared...
Ichiro wasn't involved beyond being shoved, looked like he might've been in the way of the defense, but there wasn't any obstruction.

What's funny is that yesterday I was covering an American Legion game and the third baseman had a runner in a run-down between third and home.
As he threw it home it hit the runner and went behind the backstop.
He scored, the whole team came on the field and the ball was behind the team somewhere. Meanwhile another runner came around to score.
There wasn't any interference call but the players were definitely in the way of the catcher if he could've gotten over to the ball.

Also, I had to mention this. I try not to bash the WWL on here very often, but sometimes, they make it hard not to. They just flashed an update that said "ESPN the Magazine's Buster Olney reports that Mark Buehrle has signed a contract extension with the White Sox" as they showed footage of the Cell's fucking jumbotron showing the news to everyone.

    No shame...

Actually, I'd call it a near brawl; no effective punches thrown, no baseball-style wrestling moves executed.

The guy who went after Blanton was Jason Ellison who, in one of his few starts for the year, went 4-4. Post-game theory by radio reporters (M's) was, umps couldn't tell whether it was Ichiro or Ellison who went after Blanton (high socks, about the same size, but...), felt they had to throw at least one M, McLaren talked them into booting Miguel Batista, who is much bigger than either Ichiro or Ellison. Something about going over the fence that protects the photogs and onto the field... Huh? What were the umps doing? They didn't answer questions immediately following the game. Batista made himself absent for the postgamer, by the way.

Ellison claimed in a post-game radio interview that Blanton not only shoved Ichiro harder than necessary, but also threw some choice words Ichiro's way. I'll say this for Blanton; he knows how to pick his opponents.

At the time of the play the M's announcers agreed that Ichiro was in the way, and that Blanton went out of his way to be aggressive. Had Ibanez scored on the play, sounds like interference would have been a legitimate call.

Typical baseball scrum. I hope the video winds up on the net so we can give it a look.

[Update: video is now available on the M's website, perhaps on the A's as well. A's announcers agree Blanton is faultless. It was a pretty good shove, but Blanton's a big kid. Missing piece, if Ellison is being truthful, is what Blanton said following the shove. Ichiro was backpedalling, didn't appear to be engaging in any way.]

One note: the M's were 2-17 against the A's last year, are 7-2 so far this year, with five of those wins coming in Oakland, where they hardly ever prosper.

Give Stormy a break. If it weren't for him, God knows what the Reds record would be right now. Without David Weathers, this team could be 30-58 (or worse).

Speaking of the bullpen, is it too early to designate Paul Coffey for assignment? Has he shown anything to deserve a spot on 40-man roster?

Watched the game, too, and thought the same thing. Can't remember if it was said the first time, but they mentioned that story again on another update and it was Olney reporting the contract terms being four years, $56 million. That wasn't listed on the jumbotron.

And no, I don't work for the WWL and yes, I hate Berman, Scott and many of the other Never will be Ready for Prime Time Players.

During tonight's game they did an "update" with ESPN's Buster Olney reporting blah blah blah... by which time every bit of that info was on AP including the 4 years, $56 mill.

    Just more ESPN bullshit

My bad. E-Freelance. The Coffey in question should be Todd Coffey.
