Given the thread title, I expected something a lot more condescending.

The New York Times is shocked that we have something nice here, and expects everyone else to be, as well. They are so shocked that they just had to do a story about it.

    They couldn't be more condescending.

Look at a fucking map, you condescending twits.

I'm pretty shocked that there's something nice in Gary, Indiana. Not the whole of Indiana. But Gary.

An earlier headline in that series was "Can Sand Valley Make Wisconsin the Next Golfing Destination?", which is completely misinformed. See: Whistling Straits, Erin Hills, a few others.

    You're being a little sensitive.

That said, I think the lede is meant to critique the place:

Gary, Ind., is rooted at the bottom of the U-shaped curve of Lake Michigan, a region of crisscrossing highways, casinos and forests of smokestacks.

And that all sounds just fine to me.

"Do you have anything for us today, Scoop?"

"Boss, I just found out that there's fishing in Minnesota."

I vacation on beaches in Northwest Indiana each summer. I'd rather the East Coast not know about them.

I can see why it would be stunning that there's a beach there.

Reddit would be shocked as well:

Went to the air show there a few years ago. The beach was nice.

Missed the highway entrance on the way home. Ended up downtown. Not nice.

Indiana Dunes State Park/National Seashore just to the east was a favorite childhood spot -- went on some family outings and school field trips there. Beautiful beach and dunes, plus a great long-distance view of the Chicago skyline on clear days.

Illinois Beach State Park up near the Wisconsin state line was a nice place to visit back then, too. A few of the towns it's situated near aren't exactly garden spots, either.
