Election Night Pizza

Every night is not election night in sports.

That said, 15-17 football fridays in a one- or two-man shop are as bad as it gets, and I've worked news on election night.

I even felt bad for local TV sports guys tonite...one of the local networks earlier talked about digging in for the night with reporters all over town until the last vote is counted blah blah blah and I thought of the sports guys from that station that I've seen often on Fridays, hitting two or three games before hustling back to the studio.

I'm not so sure the complaint is as much that sports works harder than news, or at least has to do more on deadline (though I believe that is true as a generality), but that management goes nuts the rare occasions news has to do a lot in very little time but fails to acknowledge it when sports does the same thing a lot more often.

There are two reasons why. In some cases, it is a matter of higher-ups coming from the news side.

The more prevalent one is the fact that sports does make it almost seem routine. Sometimes, at least in terms of dealing with management, it is possible to do your job too well.

  4. Dye: Suck? Nah. Overall I can't complain too much.
Would I love one or two more full-timers on staff, particularly if it meant creating some writing-only and desk-only positions? Absolutely. But who among us has everything he or she wants?
I'm not afraid of having to work hard to do my job, so I don't feel my current situation sucks. I was just citing my example as to why I don't feel much need to blow a party favor for my pizza-fed, heroic colleagues on newsside tonight.

    outofplace: Bingo.

During the September primary at my paper, sports wasn't included in the pizza order. Apparently a couple of the people got ticked enough and complained to the right people, garnering a newsroom-wide e-mail Monday reminding us that there'd be election night pizza "for news and sports folk."

And they kept their word. Only critque from us is there are too many veggie pizzas and not enough meat toppings.

We actually had a full pizza left over and I got to take it home! Wahoo!

We're about pizzaed out at this point. And damn you, AP, for not moving over one take with all the gubernatorial election results, like you did with the Senate and House. Would've made too much fucking sense. Made putting together my election rail a bitch.

Our ME actually came over and invited us for pizza. We also had boxes of oranges available for the taking. Kinda peculiar.

Leftover pizza on the screen. Well done.

(if I don't see any pizza for a while, it will be too soon)
