I was in Auburn Hills the day Alford and the Hawkeyes shit the bed. Of all the college basketball games I've covered, that was the one that surprised me the most.

That game started Alford's road out of Iowa. He was dead to whatever few fans he had left.

As for the 1987 Hawkeyes, that was another bed-shitter. Big Ten Network has been showing the regional semifinal game from that year against Oklahoma, when they won in overtime. A classic.

    nice pull

  3. Last night's was really awful.
"Dropping in" the CBS stars and their play-by-play calls was a terrible idea.

That Oklahoma game was the high point of the Davis Era at Iowa. What makes that statement sad is that it was his first season at the school.

Eventually all of Raveling's recruits moved on and we were treated to steady diet 2A Iowa high school point guards and big man "projects" that never panned out.

For the next decade you could count on two things happening at every Davis-coached Iowa game- too many bounce passes and a failure to identify the other team's key three-point shooter.

  5. The evil spirit of Kreklow descended upon Iowa City and remained for a while.

Iowa was up big at the half because Tarkanian used some ridiculous defensive strategy. He told the story of how he instructed his big men not to follow Iowa's bigs (who were good shooters) to the three point line; the perimeter defenders would pick them up.

    It was epic fail.

Tarkanian said that at halftime, the players had a near-mutiny and demanded they just stay with their men. It was a better strategy and keyed the comeback.

No word on how much cash he stuffed in envelopes for them as a thank you.

Yet, given the state of the program today, Iowa fans would probably want that back.

  9. There's a lot of great Hawkeye talk on the board these days.

And we haven't mentioned that three more football players (including Ferentz's son, again) arrested over the weekend. :)

Oh, and I agree with what you said about the CBS announcers' calls thrown into this year's Shining Moment.

Horrible and godawful are about the nicest things you could say about that shitty song.

Someone needs to tell Nantz to join the 21st century and find a better fucking song.
