Fate of Rocky Mountain News to be announced

Mile High,

You've been great giving me tips on travel to Denver, etc. This news is terrible, and "best of luck" doesn't even begin to cover it but it's all I've got for now.

Maybe Fort Collins will finally get serious about putting out a quality product and snap some of you guys up. But then again, it's Gannett, so I'm doubtful.

I can't add anything (except condolences, of course), but there's something about that video. Newsrooms -- good ones, at least -- are such vibrant places, filled with passionate people who really care about what they're doing.

Soon that space will be filled with cubicles for some tech company or something. Nothing against the people who work outside journalism, but there's no vibe like the one in a good newsroom, and now that's gone.

When the RMN front loads now, there's a pop-up announcing that RMN readers will start getting the Post as of Saturday.

I'm really concerned for the journeyman reporters and editors at the RMN who can step in anywhere and do a creditable job. Where do they go?

Nowhere. There's not enough openings in the country for all of them, let alone everyone else who is looking.

And the comments come saying good riddance as normal on the RMN's Web site.

Sadly, those are the people that just won't ever get it. The same kind of people that continue walking when they see someone have a heart attack, get hit by a car or mugged in broad daylight.

"Oh, well. That sucks for him/her. Well, got to hurry so I don't miss lunch!"

Concerned only with themselves and no one else. No concept of showing any humanity or humility for those hurting, suffering or in need.

It really is amazing. I think it's a perfect sign of how technology has allowed so many people to spread hateful, evil and hurtful thoughts without having to show any responsibility or accountability for their actions.

Today, I hurt more than usual for those in this business. Every day, this industry is one day closer to death - largely because those in control either have greed-driven motives or no f-ing interest to reinvest in the product.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of us still in this business, especially today in Denver.

Regular person + anonymity + audience = asshole. It's the basic equation of the internet.

I'm a walking zombie about this right now and I think I've read the paper maybe 20 times in my life.
God, what a terrible, terrible day.

I don't know if it's any condolence, but at the very least the RMN isn't publishing during the WARN notice period, which means the employees get paid during that 60-day period without having to work for an employer that has already fired them. The P-I is currently publishing during the 60-day WARN period -- and it's agony for those employees.

On the other hand, I don't know if it's more or less agony than getting a few hours' notice of your final edition. All I know is this all sucks hard.

And I'll do my best to not dance on their graves when their businesses go titties up/get outsourced for cheaper labor and they lose their jobs.
