Here's a couple of ways to look at it...

$5 is about one Starbucks a month.

$5 is buying the Denver Post only on Sundays

$5 is most of what you would pay for a newsstand copy of ESPN:The Magazine or Sports Illustrated.

If you got better coverage than in the Denver Post, I would think it would be worth it if you are a fan of the Denver sports teams.

Gold,

No argument here as far as what I would do. Of course I'd be willing to subscribe, but my fear is that what I posted higher up with those reader comments could represent the masses more than us.

Not sure about that. So far, the commenter you quoted seems to be in the minority on that site.

Now, whether or not that adds up to 50,000 subscribers remains to be seen ...

Pseudo, believe me I hope you are right. But I have since come across other articles on different sites broaching the pay-for-content model and concluding that it won't fly, backing themselves up with reader comments and polls.

Again, I beg to differ with them but I'm, just sayin' ...

With the elimination of space in newspapers and some papers folding, this might make it easier for a website to charge money for internet content if the content is really good.

You see, that's where one of those commenters was going. In essence, "Show me the content first and prove to me it's worth paying for and then I'll subscribe." I'm guessing the INDenverTimes.com people are banking on the fact that since they have revealed the names of those ex-RMN staffers, their previous work speaks for itself and readers who are already familiar with that work don't need to be convinced, thus they will subscribe first. But 50,000 is a pretty big number. I hope they have their finger on the pulse and can reach that number.

Here's a very well done, in-depth Q-and-A with the managing editor.

Thanks for posting that link MileHigh, and I truly mean it when I say I want it to succeed and I hope it succeeds. Again, all of us will be watching very closely.

Just as an update.
The third time was the charm. After first two checks for expenses wouldn't cash, the third one went through.
Wouldn't bring it up but I had posted earlier about frustrations getting home after paper folded and did want to make it clear that the expenses were finally paid.

That's great to hear.

So Scripps basically fell behind 0-2 in the count and decided to swing at the third pitch and made contact -- with their eyes closed? Is that what you're telling us here Ringo? ;D

All kidding aside, I'm happy for you that it did not drag on.

BTW. How's the site doing?

I think it is doing okay, but I don't know much about levels. I know I was told we are getting around 3,000 hits a day, and 1,000 of those are unique. Showing my age, ignorance and whatever else, I'm not sure what unique means.

I believe "unique" means non-repeaters. In other words, of the 3,000 hits, 2,000 of them were secondary and tertiary clicks by the same people -- but I could be WAY off base on this.

On a side note, did I read correctly that Steve Foster is no longer onboard because he is neck-deep in the new site INDenverTimes.com?

Steve is involved as the technical guy but Jack Etkin and I are doing the coverage aspect. That's really the way it was set up to begin with. Steve as a little more hands on early because he was dealing with two dinosaurs trying to find a way to survive in this modern era, but I think other than my inability to avoid typos Jack and I now have basics down so we can file.
