Rule was changed two years ago that avoids the DQ.

So while it might SEEM this is a Tiger Rule, it's not.

Fascinating debate on Golf Channel. Brandel Chamblee says Tiger should DQ himself.

Others saying: If Tiger wins, it comes with an asterisk. There was a misinterpretation of the rule. Tiger can set a precedent if he doesn't play.

Not a word about Tiger's penalty on the Masters iPad app. He is listed at -1 on the leaderboard with no explanation.

    Edit: It's now up.

i know diddlt about golf; covered '84 masters without ever leaving press tent. that said, i've been watcging this hysteria via espn and the golf channel this a.m. and am left wondering: wouldnt the classiest thing for tiger be to d.q. himself before he tee off this afternoon? i dont see where he has much chance to come back to win at this point -- especially given his history of NEVER coming from behind to win majors -- so why not score points with the 'rules-are-just-made-for-tiger' naysayers by 'fessing up he just MAJORLY effed up. even moreo after his cold response to the slow-play penalty on the kid being, 'rules are rules.'

    dickhead.

He's five shots back. He's by no means out of the tournament and absolutely could still come back to win the thing.

    That said ...

I'm with those who think he needs to withdraw. He gained an advantage by dropping where he did. This wouldn't have been a problem had he not said post-round that he PURPOSELY dropped two yards back -- to gain an advantage. Three minutes earlier, he drilled a perfect shot that took a bad break when it hit the stick and went into the pond. So he goes two yards back and sticks the shot again. He knew what he was doing when he dropped where he did. He gained an advantage by dropping where he did and the committee is going on a rule but is misinterpreting it. There was no ignorance of the rule on Tiger's part which is what the committee is going off of.

I love the Golf Channel guys getting tough on Tiger. If he was DQ'd, they'd be crying in their shoes about how the rule is unfair. Because he's still in the tourney, they get to pretend like he's doing a disservice to the game. If he wins Sunday, they'll be licking his spikes like they do whenever he plays.
I didn't have a problem with the drop. If you watch the replay, you can see the divot from his previous shot. He's 3 or 4 feet behind it. Playing it from the left or right side risks it actually being close than the original spot. If he drops it and it ends up closer to the hole, he has to re drop anyway. So he drops it four feet behind it, it sticks, and he plays it.
I was always under the impression you could play the ball from point of entry as far back as possible.

    Augusta National statement:

Yesterday afternoon, the Rules Committee was made aware of a possible rules violation that involved a drop by Tiger Woods on the 15th hole.

In preparation for his fifth shot, the player dropped his ball in close proximity to where he had played his third shot in apparent conformance with Rule 26. After being prompted by a television viewer, the Rules Committee reviewed a video of the shot while he was playing the 18th hole. At that moment and based on that evidence the committee determined he has complied with the rules.

After he signed his scorecard, and in a television interview subsequent to the round, the player stated that he played further from the point than where he had played his third shot. Such action would constitute playing from the wrong place.

The subsequent information provided by the player's interview after he had completed play warranted further review and discussion with him this morning. After meeting with the player, it was determined that he had violated Rule 26, and he was assessed a two-stroke penalty. The penalty of disqualification was waived by the committee under Rule 33 as the committee had previously reviewed the information and made its initial determination prior to the finish of the player's round.

Another TV viewer becoming PGA Official For A Day. I'll never be comfortable with that.

My question is this. If D.A. Points makes that illegal drop in the same situation, what would his penalty be right now? The same? Worse?

Golf turning into pro wrestling. Good shit, maybe Tiger can hit Fred Couples with a chair before he tees off today. The fact that they do this just hours out after "makin' an example out dat young boy" with a one-stroke penalty is a joke. I have no doubt Moe Biggsley will win and we'll all have to pretend it was legit.

The same and no one gives a shit.
Everyone saying Tiger should DQ himself, but they all think Arnold Palmer should keep his first Masters title.
