I mentioned on another forum that Dave Fairbank, a 30-year veteran of our staff is relocating out of the area. That creates a vacancy and we are hiring.

After a couple of internal moves, the open position is for someone to cover high school sports on the Virginia Peninsula. We have a five-person writing staff, a columnist, two college reporters and two high school reporters.

We are a Tribune Publishing media company and, as the ad says, we are are digital first. Video and social media skills are a necessity. You will stand out if you include in your application how you will use all social media skills in your job.

Here is the ad on journalism jobs:

The Daily Press, located in Newport News, Va., is looking for a reporter to cover high school athletics. The ideal candidate will have a digital-first approach to news, embrace social media and video, have the ability to develop sources and be a strong storyteller. We want someone who can cover a game and file on a tight deadline, but who can also develop enterprise stories and localize trends and topics. You’ll work with a veteran staff in an area that often has local connections to national sports events and stories.

The Daily Press is located on the Virginia Peninsula, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, James River and York River. We cover a region with multiple cities and counties, including Newport News, Hampton, Yorktown and Williamsburg. We are home to Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Fort Monroe. We offer a great place to live and work.

Send your resume, cover letter, three references and five writing samples to Sports Editor Andi Petrini at apetrini@dailypress.com.

I don't know the salary range ... I'm not involved with the hiring process at all. I'll be happy to answer any questions, but I don't often log in as myself. Best to e-mail lburke@dailypress.com with your questions.

I posted this on the other thread, but I've been on vacation. I'm told we have narrowed the field down from on the far side of 100 candidates to the ones we're going to interview.

Since this was posted twice, I'll update it twice .... the position is filled. No name to put out there yet, but once we know all notifications have been made, I'll do that.

We have hired Kate Yanchulis, a graduate of the University of Maryland, for our open high school reporting job. Kate covered Maryland's football and men's basketball team for the Diamondback. She has worked for the Fairfax County Times for the past couple of years covering the education beat and helping out the sports editor.

Still 2 left and since Kate will be moving into Dave Fairbank's old desk, perhaps she won't mind if we call her Dave, too!

I sit corrected; I thought you guys had lost another Dave in the past year or so.
