How do you handle backups?

A broad question about how you (or your shop) handle backups ... of files, of email, of photos, of databases, of websites, of social media content, of whatever you store digitally.

I'm curious after reading this saga:

Wired reporter Mat Honan was hacked, and realized too late that all his accounts were so interconnected the hacker was able to wipe almost everything in one fell swoop. Even his backups were destroyed, because they were on connected iCloud accounts.

For myself, I backup online and to an external hard drive. The papers I worked at and in my Univerity Relations office relied on burning DVDs, which likely will degrade before someone remembers to change backups.
