Iceland: Anyone been there?

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Evil ... Thy name is Orville Redenbacher!!, Jul 14, 2018.

  1. wife is talking about a trip to Iceland.
Flights - 6 hour non stop - are going for $99.

Im intrigued. Worry about food and language barrier.

    Anyone been there?
    Thoughts?

It's the most beautiful place I've ever been. I was there in June two years ago for 10 days. Will go back next summer.

Great hiking, if you're into photography there's maybe no better place and the people are very nice and all speak English.

There's no language barrier; you'll be fine. Same with food, though I was there for five days and only remember having dinner one night at the Hard Rock. I probably went there so I'd be the only one on my block with a Reykjavik T-shirt. Seem to remember it was a very clean and pretty place.

I've read it's a great place for a foreigner to get laid. I guess you'd have to take that up with the wife though.

Yeah, overnight layover in Reykjavic, arriving late afternoon in the rain so the conditions weren't ideal to go exploring.

And my pizza cost 17 bucks.

I heard about this museum on The Sports Repoerters Czabe and Andy Pollin (Polley) about eight years ago:

    The Icelandic Phallological Museum

You absolutely need to go, take the wife, then come back here and give us a longform piece on it.

Also, Iceland has lots of volcano, geyser, geologic sites to see. I’ve heard comparisons to Yellowstone. You need to make sure you get out on a few boat rides or helo tours to see the less frequented parts.

Please keep us posted! I want to go too!

    $99? Is that from Baltimore?

Iceland is at the top of my "places to go" list, international edition. A trip probably wouldn't happen until next year at the earliest, but definitely report if you go.

The food isn't anything special, but there's plenty of good meals to be had. And you will find horse on the menu at some places, if you're into that.

As a whole Reykjavik didn't do all that much for me, but Akureyri, the other city in Iceland -- everything else is a town, if that -- is great and charming.

Walter Mitty would approve -- the 2013 film version, anyway. A good chunk of the movie (all scenes said to take place in Greenland, Iceland and Afghanistan) was shot in Iceland.
