I think it's interesting how there are some burger chains that are incredibly successful in some regions, but they don't really expand to the rest of the country.

Here's the thing. You can pay the extra buck or whatever for the regular burger, but for most people, the little burger is more than plenty. Here's the prices in DC.

    Little cheeseburger 3.89
    Regular fries 2.59
    Regular drink 1.79
    Total 8.27

Edit: Obviously, prices vary, but if I can get a burger-fries-drink at Five Guys for under $10, I'll pay it. More than $10? Probably not.

Local joint back home in Seattle called Dick's. They will never go anywhere else, good, cheap burgers.

At lunch time in the Emerald City every Dick's location is packed.

Give me Fuddruckers any day, although I love Back Yard and In-n-Out. Haven't tried Five Guys yet but on the lookout for one in my travels.

Five Guys is expanding all over the place in my area, my wife and I love going there and the kids love the hot dogs.
I love the concept, very simple menu, do it well but when you start opening stores all over the place, how can your quality not suffer?

It never seems to get mentioned on the semi-regular burger threads here... but Fatburger is really good.

The wife and I ate at Five Guys tonight. Total bill: $14.12. And I had them throw some grilled onions and jalepenos on the burger. Best one I've had in a good, long while.

Live in a 25,000-person town with four McDonald's - one within walking distance of the office - and four more McD's within 15 minutes outside the city limits.

Backyard Burgers didn't last two years here. Never packed. And it had a great location (right next to Best Buy and in front of Barnes & Nobles) on the most traveled road in the county.

My town's also had a Hardee's and Burger King fail, while McDonald's flourish (the one within walking distance has a double drive thru).

That being said, some folks are trying to lure Five Guys here. One just opened 2009-2010 in Lexington and has been rocking ever since.

I'd go to Five Guys, and as good as Backyard was - albeit it was SLOOOOOW in the drive thru - I'm not surprised it failed.

I was never a Backyard fan. Their patties always seemed too overcooked and dry for me.

There are tons of places to get good burgers. Far too many good burgers to get excited about one chain or another.

Whataburger? Seriously? The only time I'm able to go into a Whataburger is when I'm drunk. The food isn't bad, but I'm yet to go into one that isn't old and disgusting... not to mention the orange color all over the place.

The best burger I've had in DFW is at Twister Root: http://www.twistedrootburgerco.com/
Go with a friend or 2 and share the fried ride to go with your burger, it may kill you but it's so totally worth it. If you like root beer, their homemade root beer rocks too
