Is a ring necessary?

Do you think a wedding ring is the ultimate symbol of marriage?

Do you think marriage requires the wearing of rings?

Requires? No, of course not. But the ring does mean something.
I wore mine proudly when I was married.
Hocked it as soon as I wasn't married.

    Yes!
Because w/o them, "rings, but not on that finger" would never have been sung and it's a killer phrase in one of the top songs of all time.

No. It's a symbol. It all comes down to how both sides act without each other. That said, I never take my ring off unless I just need something to fidget with. I like having it on. Funny thing is, not many people notice it. The amount of times I need to point it out to people would surprise you.

My wife, on the other hand, loves her rings, but will sometimes forget to put them back on after a shower or whatever. Leaves the house without them. But, honestly, it's no big deal.

It isn't necessary. Of course not.

But if you are married, and you don't wear one, that means something to most people, too, both within, and outside of, the marriage. So, the reverse is true, as well.

It doesn't have to be expensive or showy. Heck, that old saying about how "I'd be happy with a ring out of a Cracker Jack box"? It would actually be true for me if I loved someone and that's all we could afford, because it's the fact of having/wearing a ring that matters, not how ostentatious it is.

My parents have been married for 55 years and my dad has never worn his. One brother has been married 20-plus years and never worn his - other brother has always worn his. I've never been married so I don't know what I would do -- wouldn't want to but if my wife cared about it then I would.

When we first got married, I wouldn't have worn one because I don't personally care for wearing jewelry, but my wife insisted. I know, I know... single women, models, and porn stars beat down my door, and I have to send my culls to Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey, so if wearing a wedding ring warned them off, I complied. I was constantly taking it off, fiddling with it, etc. I just don't like anything restrictive.
Fast forward many years, and along came silicone rings. I barely know I'm wearing it.

My uncle wishes they'd had silicone rings in the 70s because he jumped off a ladder on the back of an ambulance, got his hung, and popped his finger right off.

For a second I thought this was going to be something more appropriate for the rasslin’ thread.

Same thing happened to my Dad, except his was caught as he was getting down from a railroad car.

Stripped all the meat off. Nothing but bone and tendon left.
