The problem the newspaper business has had with the internet was in having all the tools to dominate the business and none of the innovative thinking required to make it happen. But simply ignoring it and allowing your brand to die wouldn't have helped, either.
Let's say the Lex H-L decided it was not going to get into the free distribution of its material over the internet. Not ever.
So somebody's online and wants to read about UK's game. That person could click on Cats' Pause, could click on the Louisville C-J, could even just read the AP stuff on ESPN, CBS, Sporting News, wherever.
How has the H-L helped its bottom line? That person still didn't go running to the corner store to read the paper's coverage. He or she doesnt' HAVE to, any longer.
