Let me christen the first "American Idol" 2008 thread

It'd be an unrealistic opinion, because that's not what the voters are doing. It's NOT just about singing talent.

IJAG is right. Hernandez shouldn't have gotten tossed. He was good enough in previous weeks, better than Amanda, Chickeze, Syesha, Ramielle, KLC and perhaps Brooke and the Aussie, to merit sticking around. The guy had a better shot of being in the top 5 than any of the others in the bottom three.
I'll agree with you on everything except including Chikezie. He's been on fire the past few weeks.

I meant up to Tuesday's performance. I agree Chickezie's last performance was better than anything Hernandez did.

Looks do count as far as picking an Idol. Think of previous eras of "idols": Fabian, David Cassidy and such. Not great artists or singers, but had looks and that certain something. Looks, and even more of substance, stage presence, have to be considered.

No it isn't. A competition that leads to Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks being winners indicates that it's either not that crass a phenomenon, or they really are about selling units and not fulfilling the mission consistently well.

And even if it is about selling stuff, you don't think looks and presence are an important part of that equation?

The voting should be on the total body of work. Based on that, Archuleta merits being nowhere near the bottom three....yet.
Bullshirt. If someone comes out, doesn't know the forking words, and stumbles through it, you have to take that into greater account.
You have to be prepared every time. It's a competition.
If Duke opens the NCAA tourney against Bumblefork Tech or Ball State and falls flat on its ass and loses, you think they get a do-over? Or they should move on because they're ranked in the top five? No. They lose. They're out. It's a competition.

If Duke does it during the regular season, they get a do-over in the form of an at-large tournament berth. One stumble doesn't end a season in any sport. Baseball, in fact, has a seven-game series simply because it understands that a great team can have a bad game. The same goes for basketball. And let's not forget that this is a subjective competition, where a single stumble can be weighed against the greater body of work.

I want to do holy unmentionables to Brooke, who just forkin killed, BTW.

WFW my friend. She's got that pureness, while still looking very sexy. I wanna do very, very naughty things to her.

Oooooooohhhhh, yeah, old Noonan loves Brooke. She can come be my nanny and play my piano any time. Ah, gosh, I can't believe I just said that.

Seriously, the girl's got what it takes. She's going to be big-time. Really, really big-time down the road. I love her singing. Dang, I think I just love her, period.
