MLB 2014 season thread

Maddux's was pretty lame, but I thought Glavine's was very polished, among politician-quality. And the stuff about his parents was particularly moving.

In Thomas' case, emotion does not necessarily equal great. The shoutouts to his teammates were cool and I can understand tears when talking about his late father or his wife and kids, but did he really have to start crying when talking about his agent? C'mon, man.

Cox was by no means outstanding but at least kept it brief. On the other hand, La Russa and Torre JUST DRONED ON. Torre giving the play-by-play of every key Yankees playoff victory was an out-and-out snooze-fest.

I am so tired of the Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer slobberfest that's going on in Chicago.

For three years now, they've been allowed to tank in an unprecedented fashion. Not only are they allowed to tank for draft position every year, they've been able to bring big-market resources into the equation by signing free agents on one-year deals to "flip" at the trading deadline for more prospects. And of course, they've spent tons of money in the draft and in international free agency as well.

So of course they have a historically good farm system. Congratu-forking-lations. When you feel like it, could you get around to winning some baseball games?

Am I the only one who thought Frank Thomas gave a great HOF speech while Maddux and Glavine's speeches were worse than an awkward high school valedictorian speech?
Glavine has always been dull as dishwater.
Does the guy ever smile? Could he not have smiled once?

I laughed when Maddux thanked his brother for teaching him how to fart on a lighter. That's got to be a new one for Hall speeches.

The shot of Mike Maddux in the crowd with a Cheshire Cat grin was pretty funny too.

When that magical Jumbotron appears at Wrigley, just you wait. That will win the Cubs a World Series. (sarcasm font off)

The Cubs don't deserve to ever win another World Series.

Greg Maddux.
Farts on lighters.
Pees on teammates' legs.

Great pitcher. Strange fellow.

The aforementioned Jason Lane, once an outfielder with the Houston Astros, went 6 1/3 shutout innings against the Braves today in his first start for the Padres. He left in the 7th after allowing a solo homer to Evan Gattis.

Cubs trade Darwin Barney to the Dodgers for a PTBNL & cash.

Maybe the Dodgers can turn around and flip him to the Giants for multiple top prospects.

That's the same formula Jon Daniels used in Texas. He flipped Kenny Lofton, Eric Gagne and others for some good farmhands. It took four years and started disastrously with some horrible trades, but eventually the Rangers built their system, won two pennants and had a nice run of competitive seasons that could continue next year if everyone returns healthy.

It may take longer for the White Sox, Cubs, but give it another two or three years. (Brainfart.)

So they sucked for a long time, made the playoffs three times, and now suck again.

That's not exactly a great deal.
