I think it's strange that Maddux was never given an opportunity in TV the way Smoltz and Glavine were. Either he really ticked off some media people in his playing days, or idiot execs were worried about how his weight gain would look on TV.

 

At least at the ballpark

 

In my experience, he was polite. I don't think he ticked off media. I just think there are other things he wanted to do. Smoltz is a natural at it, and I think Glavine welcomes the chance to share knowledge about the game with the public.

 

Yeah, his weight gain would really be a problem. Those guys in the booth are on the screen for up to 30 seconds at a time. John Kruk, for one, has really been discriminated against.

I think Maddux hasn't been on TV because he doesn't want to be. He'd rather be a part-time coach and plays lots of golf.

 

Pirates catcher Chris Stewart was a dugout guest for a couple innings during last night's Giants game, there's a guy who could have a future on TV when he is done. Hell, if Buck Martinez can do it.....

 

Back to the Cubs: Besides the on-the-field disaster, they're pissing away the things that make their team a tourist attraction.

Every time I look this summer, they're playing night games. I believe at least half their home schedule is night games, with many of them during the summer.

WTF? Despite 100-plus years of losing teams, their reliable source of income has always been baseball in the summer sunshine at Wrigley Field. And now they're trying to screw that up, too.

 

I've been to Wrigley probably 10 times, and every one was a day game. I can't even imagine going to a night game there.

 

The night games draw better than the day games .They've been fighting the city for years to get more, but zoning restricts them.

 

Not sure how much truth there is to it, but Ron Santo, among others, always contended that the reason the Cubs often faded late in the year is that they were worn out from all the day games.
