The discussion on another thread about a Washington Post beat writer moving to the news side prompted a question: It's common for sports writers to move to news, but how often does an established news reporter move to a sports beat? The only example cited in that thread was Bob Hohler of the Boston Globe. Other examples? There must be a lot.

The Athletic's Dan Barbarisi was the city hall reporter at the Providence Journal, moved to the Red Sox beat, then went to the WSJ doing sports before leaving to write books. He's an editor of some sort at the Athletic.
FWIW, Barbarisi's "Dueling With Kings" book on DraftKings/FanDuel was terrific.

Zach Lowe went from covering cops at the Stamford Advocate to covering the NBA for SI, then Grantland and now ESPN.

Sal Palantonio began on news. People make it out to be a bigger thing than what it is. I have done both and excelled on both sides. In every story you have to answer who, what, when, where, why and how. As long as you can do that, the transition isn't that difficult to handle.

  6. I did both.

The news hours were way, way better. More than made up for covering town hall meetings instead of prep gamers.
