Would that be considered purely a toke'n gesture?

Washington State making a bid to join the SEC.
But seriously: How do you get your "hesitant" players to get the vaccine if you're so publicly unwilling to yourself? If the head coach refuses, some of his players will follow. Maybe a significant number of them. Maybe a number so significant that it makes the entire team vulnerable to forfeit or taking the field with an undermanned squad.

I'm the AD, I tell him there's film at 11 of him with a needle in his arm or he's fired as a public health risk. No AD would ever do that, so maybe if I'm the university president. There's never been a coach in the history of Washington State football who couldn't be replaced quite easily as far as winning is concerned.

They're getting the vax in their arm. Whatever it takes. When you live in a state that's 34% vaccinated you take any help you can get.

How many three star and above football players come from east of Snoqualmie Pass? How many more come from metro Seattle? How many Cali kids does Wazzu need to stock the roster annually? That may play great in the Palouse but when your recruiting grounds are located in the part of America that has joined the 21st century it could be fatal to your job (not to mention fatal to you.)

I also tell him that if the team loses a game due to Covid the lost revenue will be replaced out of his check. No, it wouldn't stand up, but it might make him think.

Assuming he is capable of higher brain function.

WSU has a toothless policy. It nominally "requires" students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated, but it allows exceptions for religious, medical and "personal" reasons. In other words, it's pretty much optional. Statement doesn't say much about how good your personal reason needs to be.

Alabama has announced that all non-vaccinated students have to mask basically anywhere on campus that's indoors.

Why is the conference even allowing him to participate? WSU can send vaxxed players. But no coach on site, no coach interviews. If he wants to do his own thing, like "Nick live at The Coog!" more power to him but the conference should not endorse this behavior by letting him participate in a conference function.
