BTE’s weird mask rant feels vaguely like his I need a haircut rant. It’s an inconvenience for him so he points out flaws while ignoring the fact that a) makes help slow community spread of a problem that personal choice creates and b) there had to be a line somewhere even if it causes him inconvenience.

I just think they're like Iowa. Overrated, with limited effectiveness. And COVID is Ohio State. We pretend that masks are Georgia.

The data is in. Masks work if it’s widely adopted along with other public health measures. I’m not sure why TFG politicized it, or why other leaders continue to fight it.

Public mask wearing is most effective at reducing spread of the virus when compliance is high.

Compelling data now demonstrate that community mask wearing is an effective nonpharmacologic intervention to reduce the spread of this infection,
Effectiveness of Mask Wearing to Control Community Spread of SARS-CoV-2

A large, real-world test of face masks in Bangladesh shows that masks reduce community spread of COVID-19. It also shows that surgical masks are more effective than cloth face coverings.

That's a good analogy, at least with regard to Iowa.

Masks are all defense, just like Iowa's 2021 team. A good defense keeps you in the game, but can only take you so far.

At some point, you need to "open up" on offense and get vaccinated!

There is no 6-year-old explanation. Florida got slaughtered by this virus, especially if you look at the times that waves of infection hit the state. Its death rates have been particularly high, perhaps due at least in part to the demographics of the state relative to most other states.

But you can make all kinds of simplistic comparisons to try to make false conclusions if you want to do endless bullshit about this virus. Florida is not New York, and New York is not Florida. There are different densities of population, different demographics, the virus came through each of the states in waves at different times, the weather (and therefore when people are gathering indoors) in each state is different.

Rather than playing this stupid game, people should stick to what they know with certainty, because of the evidence we have. 1) Wearing masks around other people prevents transmission. 2) Avoiding large gatherings of people prevents transmission. 3) Vaccination does a really good job of preventing deaths.

All of those things require a critical mass of people to buy in to have an effect, and people need to behave in certain ways to have the effect. Florida, speaking in general, hasn't done very well in any of those things. It also has an asshole for a governor who has made things worse with bullshit, misinformation and generally slimy behavior with regard to how he has handled the public health crisis.

Rather than making what may be unmeaningful comparisons to other places, what people should be wondering is what the true toll the virus took in that state was (because De Santis has done all kinds of dishonest things to try to obscure reality), how many people would have avoided costly and near fatal health nightmares if they hadn't been idiots about about things, and how many people in that state who are dead would still be alive?
