When DD brought up the suspect's mental state, then it was a legitimate issue. When Tony asks about focusing on the shooter, he's dodging the issue of guns. Just people looking to pick fights and exploit. Typical. I don't know why I keep clicking on this thread.

Again, there is room to discuss both the mental health system and the issue of gun control. There is no need to focus on one to the exclusion of the other. They're both part of this tragedy.

Not according to Captain Obvious.

I wonder if his other screen names feel the same way?

Call me crazy, but when Tony writes we should focus on the murderer, I doubt he is advocating for increased spending on mental health. And any serious look at mental health care needs to address the lack of funding.

But you said addressing the mental health aspect doesn't help solve the problem.

You aren't seriously dumb enough to really believe that are you?

I just find it completely amazing that almost all of SJ left is mad at the guns and has completely forgotten about the man who used them.

Oh, go fork yourself, OT.

People like "the man who used them" exist in every country, not just the United States. But you know why you don't hear about those guys doing this crap nearly as often in countries like Japan, France, England, Sweden, etc.? It's because it's not nearly as easy for the crazy deranged evil murderous dickhead to go pick up his means of mayhem at the local Wal Mart there.

The difference is NOT that people are inherently different here. There are innately crazy murderous forkheads everywhere. The difference is that it's far easier for the crazy forkheads to actually carry out their sick intentions here than in other First world industrialized nations. Thanks to our GODDAMNED WHOLLY IRRATIONAL criminal laws in this country. We'll imprison a kid and ruin his life for nothing more than holding a frickin bit of marijuana hurting nobody, but it'sjust fine to let nearly any deranged sicko to buy a rapidly firing firearm at will? I hate the way you think, Tony.

When are we gonna pull our heads out of our asses and acknowledge how utterly and completely backwards our criminal statutes are in this country? A massacre on kindergarten students isn't enough? God almightly.

I was addressing Tony's statement, which was deliberately vague. What does "focus on the guy who did it" mean? That answer isn't good enough in a community college English 101 class.

That doesn't answer my question.

Your question is based on something I didn't write.

forking coward.

Do you really believe addressing the mental health of the killer does not help solve the problem?

The mass murderer in Norway didn't seem to have any problem getting guns. It's not only a U.S. problem.

And according to JR there were also a lot of murders in West Germany last year too.

Presumably these severe mental health issues exist in about the same percentage of the population they always have. Maybe there's some environmental factor that would change that (mercury in the air? I've heard it linked to some neurological stuff). But probably not by a huge amount.

Yet before the era of assault rifles, we didn't have much in the way of people taking out dozens of victims at a time.

So: We lived with schizophrenics and no rapid-fire guns, and now we live with schizophrenics and rapid-fire guns. Which of these is truly changeable?

Well, taking away assault rifles wouldn't have prevented this since he didn't use one.
