Newspapers vs. Internet

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by mookieblaylock, Jul 18, 2006.

  1. In these days of newspaper cutbacks (see the countless threads here), why is there still an old-fashioned arrogance among newspaper people who act like the Internet is going to go away? It seems obvious to someone who's been in this business for awhile that we can't afford to have that attitude anymore.

So my question becomes: If ESPN.com and the LA Times or Chicago Trib (or insert big newspaper here) both offered you the same job, same pay, which would you feel more comfortable, more secure taking?

But the Internet is going to go away. Just look at papers from the 1960s and 1970s, and then look at today's.

You're drawn to them. You can't put them down! You'll buy them again and again! They're better than Cats! [/designerwonk]

You can hit people with newspapers. You can't hit people with internets. Advantage: newspapers.

I'd call you a one-trick pony, but you've recently added right-wing troll to your resume. Still, it's almost refreshing to see you haven't forgotten your roots.

If you put in internet under a dog's ass, you'll short out the computer. Adavantage newspapers.

You can't line the bottom of a bird cage with an internet.

    ADVANTAGE: Newspapers

Too bad you haven't added originality or humor to your resume.

But then, that's the life of the designer.

It's still awkward to balance the laptop on my knees when I'm dropping a deuce.

    ADVANTAGE: Newspapers.

The computer doesn't like it when you do the crossword puzzle in ink. Advantage: newspapers.

Having worked at a paper that is notorious for putting design in front of editorial content, I want you to be right about all this. I do. But there's one thing - if readers don't care about visuals, how come every time a paper redesigns, the readers go absolutely bonkers complaining about it? You can't get enough people to man the phones when a paper redesigns.

You can wrap a fish in a newspaper, but you can't wrap an internet around a fish.

    Advantage: Newspapers.
