This had to be his last opportunity to make a big splash with a signing this off-season. Detroit missed out on everybody else when they are used to being the ones grabbing headlines for big contracts to big names. of the available guys left on the market Hasek was the biggest name, although I do not understand the signing, they should have given Liv or Howard a shot to run with the ball. They have a more than capable back up in Osgood already if the younger guys failed or needed mentoring. Does Holland know how o rebuild a team in the new NHL?

Being in L.A., this one ranks right up there with Rob Blake returning to the Kings. Hasek is simply a name guy to appease the Red Wings fans, but is it good for the team? Detroit needs to get younger now and this sure isn't helping.

Their first choice was Belfour whose back is as iffy as Hasek's groin.

Both are 41, both are, well, slightly weird, but both have the capacity to put up elite goaltending numbers.

They turned Eddie down because he wanted too many incentives in his contract.

    Hasek back to Detroit, huh?

Who else thinks this is the year Detroit gets knocked off its perch?

I think Edmonton has already done that.

Detroit may turn into the Senators of the Western Conference.

Detroit has flamed in the playoffs for the last few years. I meant during the regular season, as in perhaps struggling to make the playoffs.

They'll make the playoffs. They said the team was too old last year. Now, Stevie Y's gone but there are guys like Shanahan still around.

No way they'll end up in first place though..

Let's face it, IF Hasek is healthy and his age hasn't caught up with him, the Wings could be a major playoff contender next year.

Red Wing fans didn't want Belfour and they don't want Hasek. They either wanted a trade for Biron or Nabokov or Toskala or go with Howard and Osgood.

And JR, remember Shanny is with the Rangers now. But yea, the Wings have some talented forwards in Grand Rapids, which made it to the AHL finals last year.

Judging from the fan talk, this is not a welcome signing.

I should have my agent pester Holland. I'd of been happy to suffer a groin pull in training camp for a mere $250k.

Jesus, of course Brendan's a Ranger. Dumb moi.

Maybe former Brampton Battalion Ryan Oulahen who's with Grand Rapids will get a shot with the Wings.

Possibly. Hudler should definitely get a chance. He's out of options, so he can't be sent down. They also have Tomas Kopecky and Valteri Filipulla. All three have spent a couple games with the Wings last year.

Hudler isn't a big Babcock fave since he's a bit of a liability on the defensive end. But he has speed.

The addition of Markov and a full-strength from training camp Kronwall should help the physical game. And likely Darryl Bootland.

Hasek's signing has me thinking of the 1966-67 Leafs, who won the Cup with 42-year-old Johnny Bower and 37-year-old Terry Sawchuk in net. They had four guys over 40 and an average age of 31, making them the oldest team to ever win the Cup.

That's not gonna happen in Detroit, but it's still interesting to think of two future Hall of Famers sharing the netminding duties there. More than that, will they get along or will they try to kill each other?
