From a study on creatine vs. anabolic steroids ...

Creatine is chemically unrelated to anabolic steroids or androstenedione and also differs in that it does not manipulate hormone levels; rather, creatine allows muscle cells to recover from fatigue more quickly.

    And another ...

Unlike the hormonal effect of andro, creatine's mechanism of action is a natural bioenergetic one. Creatine is an amino acid derivative that enables the body's muscles to produce ATP quickly. Your body naturally has creatine in it. Through supplementation, an individual can store extra creatine in the muscle cells, allowing for more rapid refueling for repeated muscular contraction.

There no known side effects to creatine. However, following is a list of side effects from steroids and synthetic HGH:

Misuse and abuse of anabolic steroids can lead to serious health problems, some irreversible. These problems include liver tumors and cancer, jaundice (yellowish pigmentation of skin, tissues and body fluids), fluid retention, high blood pressure, increases in LDL (bad cholesterol) and decreases in HDL (good cholesterol). Other side effects include kidney tumors, severe acne and trembling.
In addition, there are some gender-specific side effects:
    • For men-shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, increased risk for prostate cancer.
    • For women-growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris, deepened voice.
    • For adolescents-growth halted prematurely through premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes.

Thanks Flash. The study I looked at said much the same thing but the language wasn't as clear.

Creatine is a combo of amino acids which can speed recovery, lessen lactic acid burn, aid in muscle growth (because you feel stronger for a longer period of time, and can lift or work out more), and some other good stuff. It's not a hormone, but it does occur naturally in the body.

One of the problems with creatine is that you really don't know how much will work for you, and if you're not working out enough, you just blob out with fat instead of muscle. The danger is that users frequently fall for the idea that more equals more...it doesn't. Your body can only absorb so much...the rest is excreted as waste, which can be a burden on the kidneys and liver, especially is the user is overdosing. It can also add a lot of water weight, which can also be rough on the kidneys.
