niekro got to 15, but to give a hint, the AL guy was a knuckleballer.

The man who looked like Randy Quaid is the answer! His hot streak got him on the cover of SI with the headline “threat to win 30.”

to make sure I understand: guy made the final out in a series, but at some point later was traded to that winning team and won a series with them?

I’ll guess Enos Slaughter? Though, you’d be hard pressed to say he led the Yankees to a series…and I’m assuming the Cardinals lost to the Yankees at some point in the 1940s and he made the final out.

The only AL knuckleballer I can think of was Wilbur Wood. That dude started like every third game and pitched doubleheaders. Has to be him. That's why I thought of Phil or Joe Niekro. I think in 1979 Phil led the NL in wins and losses (21-20).
