But Carlson didn't break any new ground in her column. She didn't write anything that hasn't been talked about around here for years; nothing that wasn't all over the message boards.
She might be the biggest name to, in essence, call Reid soft, but she is far from the first.

 

She was the first to do it in a state-wide newspaper though. That does count for something, I think. And hopefully most journalists feel their columns should be viewed and treated as at least a notch above anonymous message-board ramblings.
Just because something is "all over" pokey.com or whatever the web site is called, doesn't necessarily mean it should have a place in a traditional news outlet.

 

Exactly. Follow that logic: On the one hand, you're gonna say that we should dismiss the readers' complaints about us because they're just a bunch of message board-posting freaks who don't know what the hell they're talking about. And now, Carlson's column was somehow justified because it was the same stuff already on message boards. Gotcha. (And we're almost at 40 pages ... wahooo!)

I agree we should be held to a higher standard, but I think the outburst was surprising considering it was the popular notion (which was fed by the coaches).

Why? Do you think that only those who played football are qualified to write about it. That would be news to White House Press corps going back to George Washington, none of whom were ever president before they covered one.

There has been some very valuable give-and-take on this thread about the media and our role in dealing with athletes and coaches at the college level. If it goes 50 pages, big deal. It's been an important discussion and frequently entertaining.

The never-played-the-game angle is the most tiresome, cliched and frankly WRONG angle in this entire thread -- or any thread on this subject for that matter.

Mike Golic played that when he was properly passed over for the Monday Night Football gig in favor of Tony Kornheiser. Not only did that reek of sour grapes, but it was flat-out wrong. I'd rather listen to Tony K read the phone book than Golic read anything.

 

Golic is too busy with his NutriSystem meals to get a word in edgewise over Tony.

If you carry the "never played the game" further, then only former Presidents can criticize Bush. Only former cast members can be critical of Saturday Night Live. And only former teen pop stars who've had two children with a backup dancer/wannbe rapper can be critical of Britney Spears.
