And only brain-dead skanks can be critical of Paris Hilton.

Only people who have had to suffer through living in Jacksonville can be critical of Jacksonville. ;)

one of my personal pet peeves is the popular notion among coaches and athletes that sports writers are either nerds who are jealous of athletes or were fringe athletes themselves not quite good enough to be bigger stars. It's been my experience that about half of the reporters I've run into in this profession were actually pretty damn good at a sport in high school or college (intramural).

So you're saying that sports writers aren't necessarily nerds or fringe athletes; that, in fact, some were actually good in high school and/or college intramural sports?

    I don't get it.

Anyway, having played or coached a sport would presumably give a person a more thorough knowledge of the subject matter he or she is covering. It isn't a prerequisite for covering a sport but it's certainly an advantage.

Reread. I'm saying the popular notion is that we're nerds or bad athletes.

    Can't we be both?

I'm a proud nerd, who also played college football.
    So suck it.
That line of reasoning does extend to addiction therapists. You can't counsel someone, if you haven't beaten an addiction yourself. Its also that reasoning that pops up when ex-players get hired to do color for TV.
Being an ex-player can be useful in offering some insight. But what it really is a sense of entitlement and a disconnect between the wealthy and powerful with the media. The rich have always resented the fact that a kid making $10 a hour can ruin their life. This is filtering down to college athletes — potential millionaires — and their coaches, who are millionaires.
Jenni Carlson is probably making about 6 percent of Gundy's annual salary and if she really wanted him fired, she could get it done. Or make his life so miserable he'd quit on his own.
And a friend who does AA and NA says all the NA chicks are hot.

    ??????????????

"COVERING" something is different than doing it. I can cover a shuttle launch, I can't fly one.

I assume you are qualified to write about it, not because you played but because you are a good writer.

Not saying only those who played are qualified to cover a sport, but don't assume you know as much as the coach or the player. That's insane.

a lotta this argument is bullshit. i just as easily can say all ex-athletes will suck at being journalists for the same fucking reason.
