This one time? In band camp in Antioch, Tennessee? There were some callow boys who were sure their version of "Gimme Three Steps" was much better than Lynyrd Skynyrd's bar-busting original. Ah, youth! I still haven't found anyone who can bring as much big, stupid fun to that song.

Covers and remixes can reveal a new things about songs and singers. What are some that stand out for you because they worked so well? Who gets points for trying? Who should have kept their attempts in the shower or drive home?

I've posted this before. A stunning makeover of Harry Nilsson's 1969 hit.

One that always comes to mind. Love the Beatles, but Joe's version is bettter.

Or maybe I still get all emotional thinking about Winnie Cooper.

This seems more their song than Neil's.

    This thread has great potential.

Here's a two-pack from Warren Zevon and his buddies ...

Speaking of Zevon, this cover is wonderful.

I'm really torn. I have to work tomorrow, and right after my shift I have a chance to see Los Straitjackets with Marshal Crenshaw. Really like both... but that's a long-ass day, and I have to get up at 3:30 Monday morning. So, I'm probably skipping it. Grrrr. Wanted to see Los Straitjackets for years.

If you're into 90s and 00s music, then Girl Talk is incredible. Even better, one dude went through the trouble of matching music video clips to the music:
