Hey all, we're looking for a new high school sports reporter at the Niagara Gazette and Lockport Union-Sun & Journal, just north of Buffalo, N.Y.

Below is the official listing. I'm the sports editor, if anyone would like to know more, don't hesitate to message me.

    Mike

The Niagara Gazette and Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — six-day newspapers located in Niagara Falls and Lockport, New York — are seeking an energetic sports reporter to dive into local coverage. The coverage area includes close to a dozen high schools, a nationally-prominent junior college and NCAA Division I Niagara University.

This position requires more than writing. The ability to produce and edit photos and video and engage on social media is a must. The best candidate will be enterprising, ambitious and a self-starter.

    Responsibilities:
    • Take the reigns of our local high school sports coverage.
    • Develop stories that go beyond scores and play-by-plays.
    • Write in-depth stories that highlight personal stories.
    • Provide photos and video as needed.
    • Active use of personal social media accounts to share stories and provide game updates/analysis.

    Requirements:
    • Bachelor's in communications, journalism or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • This can be an entry-level position, but 1-2 years' reporting/newsroom experience is highly preferred.
    • Knowledge and understanding of high schools sports.
    • Adept at taking photos and video and the ability to file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.
    • Strong command of grammar and AP style.
    • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
    • Ability to multi-task and perform under deadline.
    • Past editing and newspaper design work is a plus.

To apply, email resume, cover letter with indication of salary expectations and three samples of your best work to Managing Editor Matt Winterhalter. Note: candidates for hire assume their own interview and relocation expenses.

The Gazette and Union-Sun & Journal newsrooms work in tandem in their coverage of the Western New York region. A half-hour's drive north of Buffalo, Niagara Falls is a demographically diverse community located next to one of North America's most iconic natural wonders.

The Gazette and Union-Sun & Journal are part of CNHI LLC. A comprehensive benefits package includes health, dental and vision, as well as life insurance, long-term and short-term disability, and 401(k). An Equal Opportunity Employer.
